The Education Commons will provide, in collaboration with major research and development initiatives where appropriate, the iterative design, implementation and evaluation of technological environments and information space in which the academic and research programs of OISE are carried out.


Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, Digital Products and System Architecture the incumbent will be responsible for working across teams and providing data architectural direction and oversight to create a holistic view of the data strategy, data processes, and data assets. Responsibilities include: designing, creating, deploying and managing OISE's data architecture; creating and reviewing data designs, data models and selecting frameworks and develop data roadmaps. You’ll ensure data lineage is consistent across applications and data sources while also developingand communicating strategies and common approaches for data acquisition, data access, and data archiving; creating standards for how data will be stored, consumed, integrated and managed by different data entities and technology systems; developing and implementing models of data that enables the implementation of intended architecture for OISE needs, creating diagrams showing key data entities, and creating an inventory of the data needed to implement the architecture vision; creating and reviewing datadesigns to ensure that conceptual, logical, and physical data models are consistent with architecture; ensuring that data flow is consistent, traceable, and meets OISE needs; and leading the transformation of historical data structures and business data,extracting meaning out of data, and creating an enterprise data model.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for managing project teams comprised of technical application and development staff responsible for developing applications and programs, database management, web design and web development. This includes providing staff with training, assigning and reviewing work, monitoring performance, and providing feedback and technical guidance. The incumbent acts as an expert technical resourceto the staff managed, and to the faculty for the most technical and complex data problems.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising clients and technical subject matter experts on best practice for documenting system requirements
  • Analyzing business and operational requirements to plan the implementation of new IT systems
  • Analyzing and configuring highly complex enterprise applications and services
  • Researching, analyzing andrecommending potential changes to system features
  • Defining requirements and scope of complex projects with broad impact and long-term consequences
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting

+Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer or Software Engineering, or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Eight years or more within enterprise-level Information Technology services, focusing on data modelling, database designs, data integration solutions and data architecture including:
  • A minimum of four years experience working with SQL/RDBMS systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with NoSQL systems e.g. MongoDB, CosmosDB, Graph Databases.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau.
  • Related experience with Data Lakes, Big Data, Data Analytics, Predictive Analytics, data transformation frameworks, database refactoring/re-engineering.
  • Experience in Information and Data Architecture standardization, and enterprise-level Data Governance and quality initiatives.
  • Extensive experience working with clients, stakeholders and IT resources to gather and translate requirements into efficient data structures.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Expertdata modelling and database design skills (both dimensional and relational). Advance knowledge and experience working with database design, maintenance and operations on various platforms, application security, and disaster recovery.
  • Experience directly supervising employees required.
  • Expert level skill with SQL. Strong knowledge of DB2, SQL Server, NoSQL systems.
  • Proficient with data extraction and transformation frameworks.
  • Expert level skills with PHP and Python. Experience in querying and manipulating large data sets using data querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python), or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R, SAS, Matlab).
  • Experience with designing and deploying compelling dashboards using business intelligence tools (e.g. Tableau). Knowledge in applied statistics (e.g. hypothesis testing, regressions, predictive modellings) or experimentation (e.g. A/B testing) in an industry setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills at both a technical and business level, able to build and foster positive relationships with highly dispersed and dynamic teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to permit simultaneous action on many tasks, many of which will demand timely completion.
  • Strong interpersonal skill with demonstrated training and presentation skills.
  • Strong negotiation and influence skills, well versed as a change agent and in stakeholder relationship management.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines. Agile, with demonstrated ability to quickly learn, understand and apply new technologies.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • TOGAF (or similar architecture methodology) certification.
  • Application development experience.
  • Project management (PMP) is an asset.
