Position Summary:

The Senior Research Scientist serves as the lead Coordinating Center biostatistician for one or more large multi-center observational studies or clinical trials. The analysis support team typically includes one or more of the following: biostatisticians, statistical programmers, bioinformaticists, and data scientists working on the project. The Senior Research Scientist leads the analysis support team, allocating tasks to team members and mentoring the more junior staff. The position includes working with the study’s CSCC Principal Investigator and Project Director/Manager as well as with investigators and staff external to UNC. The Senior Research Scientist will serve as the Project Manager for a large cloud-based, data analytics and data warehousing platform (Data Portal), in collaboration with other senior personnel, oversee a diverse project support team as described above but also including software developers, systems engineers, and cloud architects. This Data Portal will host data from a dozen of completed and ongoing research studies conducted across the US and internationally, providing secure-access and high-performance computing capabilities for approved users of those data.

Educational Requirements:

A PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or Statistics or in a field with substantial applied statistical training.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential Qualifications:

At least 5 years of experience working in public health research and/or clinical studies after completion of master’s degree, with at least 3 years at a Coordinating Center for multi-center studies.
Substantial experience using SAS, STATA, R or similar statistical analysis software.
Successful Senior Research Scientist must not only have substantial statistical and project manager experience but must also have a thorough understanding of statistical programming, best practices for data collection, data standardization, and quality assurance.
Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working as a senior statistician and as a project manager on large trial or cohort multi-site studies, and preferably in a large Coordinating Center setting.
Experience developing or using cloud-based computing resources, using Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Amazon Web Services.
