Position Description:

This position will provide critical communications to support the UNC Rural and the UNC Center for Health Equity Research units. The Communications Specialist will write, edit and provide a wide variety of communications in support of UNC Rural and the UNC Center for Health Equity Research. This will include developing, writing and producing a variety of printed and digital materials for each unit, including the development of marketing and branding strategy to enhance presence and recognition; engage campus and community partner stakeholders; and build a strong community through our various social media platforms; responsible for developing and administering social media content that is designed to engage users and create an interactive relationship between consumers and the organization; collect and review social media data to develop more effective campaigns. The Communications Specialist will provide subject matter expertise in engagement science for communication materials created and disseminated by the communications team from CHER’s partner organization. This includes creation of accessible and usable community-facing communications materials (including social media) designed for study partners to promote and advertise the RADx-UP program through CHER social media and other CHER communication channels. The Communications Specialist will serve as the primary webmaster for the UNC Rural website and will provide timely assistance and support to content owners and site contributors regarding website maintenance, content updates, and additional content.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

•Experience using WordPress
•Experience with website development
•Proven experience with social media and website maintenance
•Thorough knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
•Effective writing skills to include the production of reports, newsletters, presentations, websites, and social media
•Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator
•Graphic design: Adobe Photoshop, Piktochart, Canva
•Demonstrated ability to craft and implement successful communication plan
•Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience troubleshooting basic IT issues in an office environment
•Passion for addressing disparities that exist across rural and under-served communities in North Carolina in partnership
•Working knowledge of PHP, MySQL, relational database concepts
•Use of scheduling posting platforms like Hootsuite
•Experience with development of accessible content to meet ADA guidelines
