Department Description:The Division of Pediatric and Public Health is the clinical specialty for treatment of children, adolescents and special needs patients. This specialty requires a wide spectrum of knowledge, interests and skills applied for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of child and adolescent patients, as these patients represent dynamic beings undergoing changes in physical, mental and emotional growth. The Division of Pediatric and Public Health balances teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities. Faculty are involved in didactic, pre-clinical, clinical, continuing education and extramural teaching. Students include dental and medical students, pediatric residents, public health master’s degree students and PhD students. The department has 10 full-time faculty, six salaried/compensated part-time faculty, over 70 adjunct faculty, 9 post-doctoral residents, 320 DDS students, 17 full-time and 1 part-time SHRA employees and several EHRA non-faculty research staff, and an operating budget of approximately $2.5 million.

Position Description:To perform all required tasks and duties so as to assist in the provision of dental care to patients of Department of Pediatric Dentistry. This will include chairside assisting in all of the Department’s clinical settings as well as, when necessary, performing administrative support tasks and associated functions.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Must have the skills and knowledge derived from completing an accredited dental assisting II program, including radiology training to practice in North Carolina. Must be able to multi-task and perform well in different environments, as dental assisting work is conducted in at least four clinic settings—Dental Faculty Practice (DFP), student (DDS and resident), operating room and hospital dental clinic (all pediatric dentistry).
Preferred Qualifications:Prior experience in Pediatric Dentistry/Family Dentistry/Orthodontics. Prefer someone who excels in situations with rotating assignments within School of Dentistry and UNC Hospital (DFP, student (DDS and resident), operating room and hospital dental clinic). Prefer two years experience as dental assistant in North Carolina. Fluency in Spanish a plus
