Position Summary

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking a new member of the laboratory team for The Water Quality, Environmental, and Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (WQEMM) at Michigan State University.

Duties will include but are not limited to: field collection of water samples; preparation, processing, and testing of collected samples; data management and reporting of results. The ideal candidate will communicate and collaborate with on campus labs to complete projects and act as a MSU liaison for county health departments, DEQ and EPA to provide technical support and trouble shoot problems.

70% Field collection of water samples. Preparation, processing and testing of collected water samples. Testing techniques used include but are not limited to: filtering Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), Microbial Source Tracking (MST). Communicate and collaborate with on campus labs to complete projects. Provide technical support and trouble shoot problems for county health departments, DEQ and EPA as a MSU liaison.

20% Data management and reporting of results.

10% Supervision of one student employee.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four- year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic research techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: Tissue Culture, Analytical Research, Molecular Biology, Agriculture, Social Science, Physiology, Medical Research, etc., including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification, and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals specific to the area of research employment.

Desired Qualifications

5+ years of lab experience including experience with the following techniques: filtering Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), Microbial Source Tracking (MST); strong organizational skills to be able to manage, coordinate, prioritize multiple tasks and projects; ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

A Master’s degree in microbiology; water quality related field. The job requires: knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program and 2 years advanced degree in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
