Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Support Services, the Academic and Writing Support Specialist will provide direct writing support for students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Academic and Writing Support Specialist will collaborate with faculty, IRB, librarians, dissertation writing experts, National Center for Teaching and Learning, and other departments to develop group and individual learning opportunities to assist students in honing their academic and professional writing skills.
About the Department:
The Student Support Services team is the single-point of access for students and provides student-centered support services (ADA accommodations, international student services, academic supports, student life & events, etc.). The department administers a high-level of service to ensure student persistence and success.
Student Support Services team members work collaboratively within the office and with many other campus-wide and university-wide constituent groups. Team members are expected to exercise a high degree of responsibility and independent judgment, and to work hours consistent with the campus student populations’ need for access to services. Some evening and weekend hours are required to accommodate student needs.
Directly oversee the Writing Center, which services all three Southern California campuses, and deliver a high level of direct writing support to students at all degree levels. Utilize an online scheduling software and maintain a weekly schedule of activity while instruction is in progress to include office hours for student consultation, small group tutorials, and classroom presentations.
Collaborate with faculty to identify student writing needs; assist students with scaffolding requests, ensuring that feedback includes exemplars and sufficient clarity.
Collaborate with the Dissertation Writing Experts to provide comprehensive writing support for Doctoral students and to ensure a seamless transition in their academic development from pre-dissertation to dissertation stage.
Take an active role in promoting the Writing Center and represent the Southern California Campus Writing Center at orientation, open houses, and other staff, faculty, and class meetings as requested.
Provide trainings and presentations to Southern California Campus community on topics such as APA Style and writing skills, as needed.
Train student workers to serve as writing specialists, tutors, or supplemental instruction facilitators.
Collaborate with ADA Liaison in helping to coordinate exam proctoring for students with ADA accommodations.
Develop tracking and assessment metrics for the Southern California Campus Writing Center and other academic supports, making adjustments and action plans in response when necessary.
Work closely with academic departments and Associate Director of Student Support in the development of sound academic support initiatives focused on retention and holistic support.

Must be a self-starter, with an attention to detail; possess high-level organizational and problem solving abilities
Master’s degree in English, Psychology, or other related field
ESOL certification preferred
Good familiarity with APA writing style and formatting
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a higher education setting
Skilled communicator with excellent verbal and written communications skills
Ability to work independently in service-oriented environment
Excellent student service, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
Experience with Excel reporting
Some evening and weekend work required
Must possess integrity, ambition, and be process and results-driven
Demonstrated experience in managing a high level of work in a fast paced environment
Compensation: Commensurate with experience
