Associate Research Physicist - NSTX-U
Job description
Overview
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks to fill a post-doctoral research physicist position to study transport physics in high beta tokamak plasmas, including NSTX-U and possibly other tokamaks.
ResponsibilitiesA primary emphasis will be on running gyrokinetic simulations in both core and pedestal regions, and validating them with experimental measurements and analysis. The goal of this work is to improve the physics basis for predictive transport modeling, especially for low aspect ratio, high beta, high non-inductive fraction scenarios, a key mission objective for NSTX-U research as well as the broader DOE/FES Long Range Plan. The research will also consider the implications of the transport physics when scaling to reactor-relevant parameters. Candidates should ideally have experience with high performance computing, and more specifically with nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations. Candidates will be expected to be involved with NSTX-U experiments and should be comfortable with some experimental analysis. Experience with interpretive and predictive transport modeling is also desirable.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. in plasma physics or a related field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations and high performance computing highly desired.
- Some experience with predictive transport modeling desired.
- Some experience with experimental transport analysis preferred.
