Job Description:

The Art History program at Mills welcomes applications for an adjunct instructor to teach ARTH 070 (Introduction to Islamic Art) in the spring semester, 2021. The program offers lectures and seminars in western, non-western, and modern and contemporary art. A part of the Department of Art and Visual Culture, the program is distinguished by the rich diversity of backgrounds and experiences our students bring, and by our small size, which fosters a sense of community among students, faculty and staff.

ARTH 070 is a lower division class, open to all students, and will be offered online. We invite interested candidates to submit the materials listed below under "Application Instructions" as soon as possible. The teaching statement should briefly outline related courses taught and any relevant online teaching experience.

Course Description: ARTH 070: Introduction to Islamic Art. This course examines the art and architecture of the Islamic world from the emergence of the religion in the seventh century, to the rise of several Muslim empires stretching from present day India to Spain, Uzbekistan to Mali. The class will study architectural forms including mosques, madrasas, palaces, and mausolea; and art forms including illuminated manuscripts, calligraphy, glass and metalwork, among others. A special focus will be placed on the study of empire. Spring 2021, T/Th, 11 - 12:15

Compensation: For faculty new to Mills, compensation is $6,000 per course without a terminal degree and $6,500 per course with a terminal degree. Adjunct compensation is governed by a collective bargaining agreement and increases with seniority at Mills College.


Requirements:

Minimum qualifications are a Master's Degree in Art History or a closely related field. Terminal degree in Art History or a closely related field is preferred.


Additional Information:

This is an exempt, part-time position. The compensation includes state-mandated benefits including Social Security, State Disability Insurance, Workers' Compensation Insurance, Unemployment Insurance and Sick Day accrual. Employees also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts when the campus is open.
