Description:

The Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi invites applications for a Senior Research Fellow position focused on policy issues connected with the management of natural resources. The individual in this position is expected to address broadly the most pressing management issue related to our oceans and coasts particularly in the area of fisheries, restoration, blue economy-aquaculture, regulations, protected resources, and international issues. Lines of inquiry that this individual would contribute to include: Connecting restoration decisions and impacts to human communities; assessing the impact of fisheries and habitat management decisions on coastal communities around the Gulf and the greater Caribbean, evaluating the change in ecosystem services as a result of coastal and marine climate change; and resiliency and sustainability issues in coastal environments. The successful candidate will work with ecological modelers, marine biologists, geo-spatial technicians, law and policy scientists, and economists.

In addition to working in established lines of inquiry the Senior Policy Fellow is expected to grow their own engagement and research portfolio focused on policy options to pressing management issues that takes advantage of the unique multidisciplinary nature of the Institute and its international network. The successful candidate will engage in unique research of high quality and participate in the academic and intellectual life of the Harte Research Institute and the University. The Research Fellow is expected to be well grounded in analytical techniques of policy development and analysis appropriate to their discipline and be a strong writer. Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in a Federal environment and engagement with coastal communities and stakeholders on natural resource management issues is highly desirable. Job responsibilities will also include student mentoring and grant writing.

Responsibilities:
  • Address issues related to policy and management decisions of ocean and coastal resources such as fisheries, habitat conservation and restoration, protected resources, and others.
  • Work with coastal resource managers and decision-makers, community stakeholders, restoration practitioners, ecological modelers, marine biologists, geo-spatial technicians, law and policy scientists, and economists.
  • Help develop international projects that examine the management and policy dynamics of ocean and coastal resources and impacts on communities.
  • Participate in unique engagement and research of high quality.
  • Participate in the academic and intellectual life of the Harte Research Institute and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
  • Some student mentoring and grant writing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Fisheries Science, Economics, Business, Planning, Marine Science or closely related field.
  • Extensive experience in ocean/coastal natural resource management (fisheries, habitat, birds) at the Federal or state level.
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with Congress through testimony and/or policy development.
  • Experience working internationally on issues of natural resource management.
  • Experience in leading natural resource management and policy entities.
  • Experience with Federal regulations (e.g. Environmental Impact Statement, Regulatory Impact Reviews, etc..).
