The Database Administrator Lead (technical) is a leadership position responsible for implementation, integration, hosting and management as well as security and continuity of enterprise solutions across the full solution lifecycle. This position is part of a team that collaborates very closely with multiple application development teams across varying technology portfolios. Must have a passion for our clients’ success and a drive for continuous improvement. With responsibility for applications and infrastructure supporting multiple initiatives core to the University’s Strategic Plan.

Occasionally, assigns personnel to projects and/or tasks, directs activities, and evaluates performance for quality and timeliness. Reviews and evaluates work and provides management with input into staff performance evaluations. Responsible for assisting management with professional development of staff. Responsible for instructing, directing, mentoring, and training staff. Confers with and advises on policy and procedure, internal business processes, priorities, and problems. This position does not involve direct supervisory responsibility (hire/fire).

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Tactical operations for both enterprise applications and infrastructure product line and the underlying IT support organization.
  • Project Management. Responsible for implementation in support of an extensive portfolio of projects ranging from ERP maintenance, custom development, systems integration, and SaaS implementation.
  • Incident, Problem and Change Management. Provides leadership to deliver tactical break-fix, upgrades, and production migrations.
  • Solution hosting and management, security, and continuity
  • Cultivates a customer obsessed, positive, outcome-oriented culture of accountability and partnership.
Database Administrators (DBAs) are responsible for full solution lifecycle management of database and application server technology solutions:

1. Acquisition/Implementation/Installation

2. Solution Hosting & Management

3. Security & Continuity

A more comprehensive enumeration of potential job duties is provided below:

 

Acquisition/Implementation/Installation

  • Commission and install new solutions

  • Install and configure database, web, and application server software, tools, and utilities

  • Evaluate design(s) for sizing, system storage, integration, and security requirements

  • Evaluate data models and database procedures

  • Develop and test methods to synchronize data

  • Research emerging technology

  • Map out the conceptual design for a planned database

  • Refine the logical design translating to the physical data model

Solution Hosting & Management

  • Analyze and recommend database improvements

  • Analyze the impact of database changes to the business

  • Capacity planning; advise management on long‐term capacity plans and growth

  • Continually review processes for improvement

  • Create database management procedures

  • Create user accounts and control access permissions and privileges

  • Debug database issues on live data

  • Deploy system updates

  • Ensure databases run efficiently

  • Ensure platform availability

  • Ensure that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly

  • Extract live data

  • Manage password policy

  • Manage production code migrations

  • Monitor and maintain system health and security

  • Monitor performance and tune to optimize performance manage parameters

  • Install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS)

  • Install and test security (and other) patches

  • Merge databases

  • Mine data

  • Modify databases to specific user requirements

  • Monitor available disk space schedule and perform regular server maintenance

  • Optimize queries on live data

  • Plan disk storage requirements

  • Proactively tune database

  • Provide end‐to‐end technical support and problem resolution

  • Provide support to internal and external audits

  • Repair program bugs

  • Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)

Security & Continuity

  • Audit database access and requests

  • Backup and restore data

  • Communicate regularly with technical, applications, operational, and security staff to ensure database integrity and security

  • Ensure data is secure

  • Establish a disaster recovery protocol

  • Monitor user access and security

  • Maintain data standards, including adherence to relevant regulation(s)

  • Prevent data loss

  • Recover lost data

  • Set security permissions for the database



QualificationsBachelor's degree and three years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.
