The Career and Academic Advisor is responsible for assisting students in the development of their career and academic goals/plans, and for guiding students as they explore career development opportunities and employment at the College of Coastal Georgia and beyond. In addition, this position will assist first-year students, especially those that have not declared a major, by assessing their interests, abilities, and personal values to help them make informed and purposeful academic and career decisions. The Career and Academic Advisor will assure the highest levels of student satisfaction while serving students through ongoing guidance as well as enrollment and registration processes. This position will be expected to implement the use of best practices in academic advising and career development. The Career and Academic Advisor is a full-time, 12-month professional position in Academic Affairs, reporting to the Associate Director of Career and Academic Advising.Essential Duties :
•Provide expert and proactive advising for students through the development of structured academic plans. The advisor will monitor students’ academic progress and provide interventions or referrals, as necessary.
•Provide career and academic advising services to students, utilizing career assessments related to career exploration and decision making.
•Communicate and interpret CCGA policies and procedures, including general education requirements, graduation requirements, curriculum modifications, course adds/drops/withdrawals, etc.
•Collaborate with their supervisor and appropriate faculty to create relevant programming and events and to ensure that accurate information is provided for students.
•Be able to travel and provide advising at the Camden Center and participate in occasional evening and weekend activities as necessary.
•Facilitate resume, cover letter and job search skill development.
•Facilitate workshops, presentations, individual counseling sessions, and other relevant programs on topics related to career and academic development.
•Assist their supervisor, as needed, with planning and unit goals.
•Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations.
•Perform work with considerable independence under the general direction of their supervisor and assume all other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned.
•A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, education, or a related field.
•Experience providing career planning, academic advising or related student services, preferably in a college/university setting.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Strong organizational and time management skills.
•Knowledgeable of best practices regarding academic advising, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, and job searching.
•Familiar with a variety of career and academic development resources – both in print and online.
