Essential Job Duties:

The position includes assisting and conducting diagnostic plant pathogen testing from regulatory samples and reference material for proficiency test development and diagnostic controls. Tests can include serological to molecular testing.

Work is short to medium term under guidance of a supervisor or a team lead. The candidate should have experience working in biological lab doing research or diagnostics. Knowledge and experience with basic procedures to include making buffers, running gels, sample processing, growing plants in the greenhouse; laboratory maintenance. Ideally the candidate must possess good technical skills in ELISA, nucleic acid extraction, PCR and RT-PCR, electrophoresis and other molecular techniques/tests. In addition, attention to details and keeping good records of the work conducted, ability to maintain inventory of reagents and supplies, and to place purchase orders is required. The position will require following strict safety and quality management regulations and practices. Looking for an individual who is reliable, punctual, eager to learn and work within a team.

Works schedule is limited to Monday to Fridays from approximately 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (8 hour schedule, traditionally half an hr lunch) but could potentially vary. Travel outside the work locations unlikely but would be done during working hours or within a typical full days work.

Other Work/Responsibilities:


Minimum Experience/Education:

-Bachelor of Science in an agricultural field such as plant pathology, entomology, crops
science, plant science or similar plus 2-5 years of experience in plant disease diagnosis would be required

-Team player but able to conduct independent testing when necessary
-Excellent communication skills
-Ability to tabulate data and potentially
analyze data
-ability to conduct literature search for in-depth knowledge of work responsibilities
-Able to present data in a concise and structured form using programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

-Master’s level plus 1-2 years of experience would be preferred
-Several years of experience working in biological lab using molecular and serological assays on routine basis in a good laboratory practices (GLP) environment
-Experience with extraction of nucleic acids from plants, conducting PCRs for diagnostic
testing, performing ELISA tests, and being familiar with plant disease symptoms
