Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has 57 tenured/tenure-
track faculty members, over 950 undergraduate students, 580 master’s graduate students, and 260 doctoral graduate students. The department offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Engineering (CPE), and MS degrees in Computer Networking and Electric Power Systems Engineering. The department is located in state-of-the-art facilities on NC State University’s Centennial Campus.

Duties & Responsibilities:
A postdoctoral research scholar position is available in the field of plant systems biology.
computer vision, machine learning, and data management. The postdoctoral research
scholar will lead a project aimed to develop multiscale models that predict plant
performance as a function of plant and microbiota interactions. The successful candidate will assist in the development of a cyberinfrastructure for data submission, retrieval and analysis, develop multi-scale models that integrate data across biological scales, use in-silico simulations of these models to identify candidate plant genes and microbiota strains that play key roles in plant-microbe interactions, and predict / validate the effects of perturbations of plant genes and synthetic microbial communities on plant performance and fitness. The project will also include the development of strategies for storing heterogeneous datasets and the development / application of modeling and machine learning approaches for analyzing these data. ( The overarching goal of this project is to discover novel interactions between plants and microbes, providing opportunities to develop strategies to take advantage of beneficial interactions to improve plant fitness. Duties and responsibilities will include:
1) Working with a team comprised of faculty from national and international universities
across multiple disciplines.
2) Analyzing and integrating transcriptomic, metabolomic, microbiome, and plant
phenotype data
3) Developing computational pipelines for preprocessing and querying large volumes of
-omics datasets, and provide approaches for analysis and visualization of these data
4) Developing mechanistic, graphical, and machine learning models for the -omics data
generated by the project
5) Develop multi-scale models for integrating -omics data across biological scales
6) Effectively communicate technical knowledge to interdisciplinary teams and diverse audiences.

Programming knowledge in MATLAB and/or Python
Background in systems biology / computational biology approaches for modeling -omics data
Experience with relational and graph databases a plus but not required.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Qualified applicants for this position will have a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer
science, data sciences, biomathematics, or some related field. Ideal candidates will have
expertise in modeling biological systems and have demonstrated contributions to the area
of plant systems biology through publications, presentations, and other forms of
scholarship. All candidate should 1) be proficient in spoken and written English, 2) be
able to work independently and lead interdisciplinary groups of people, and 3) be hard-
working, motivated, and eager engage opportunities to learn.
