Essential Job Duties:

The Pediatric Clinical Trials Coordinator will work with the Children’s Research Institute, Pediatric Clinical Research Unit to assist in providing pediatric clinical researchers the infrastructure and resources to conduct clinical trials. The Pediatric Clinical Trials Coordinator has direct responsibility for the day-to-day activities of several pediatric clinical trials involving drugs and medical devices.

Duties include:

1. Identification and evaluation of patients (age 0-21 years old) who might qualify for inclusion in a clinical trial.

2. Recruitment and enrollment of subjects through their parents or guardians in a clinical trial.

3. Conducting study visits with subjects, communicating with subjects and families about trial requirements, and generally maintaining strong relationships with subjects and families.

4. Processing and shipping specimens as required by a clinical trial protocol.

5. Documenting data and transmitting data to trial sponsors.

6. Recognizing and reporting potential trial-related side effects.

7. Working collaboratively with a clinical trials director, investigators, and hospital staff.

8. Regular reporting of progress to leadership of the Pediatric Children’s Research Institute.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Department Required Skills:

The coordinator will demonstrate full knowledge of clinical research principles, methods of data collection and analysis to independently manage all clinical protocols. The coordinator will demonstrate basic knowledge of stastics and related information technology to analyze and report data collected in the course of clinical research. The coordinator must understand all aspects of GCP (Good Clinical Practice) to conduct clinical studies under the regulatory guidelines of the FDA and institutional IRB.

Skills include: 1) ability to understand protocols and teach them to faculty, fellows, and clinic personnel, 2) patient education, 3) basic knowledge of drug administration, 4) use of computers and test equipment.

The coordinator must possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with patients and families from diverse backgrounds in the setting of chronic disease. The role of clinical research in directly improving quality of life and other outcomes must be in a fair and objective way, balancing the completely voluntary nature of study participation while instilling confidence in the research team carrying out the clinical study protocols.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Experience working with newborns, infants, and children and their parents is preferred. Experience working with electronic medical records, especially EPIC, will be favorably acknowledged. Certified Clinical Research Professional by the Society of Clinical Research Associates is also looked upon favorably.
