About the Department:

The Department of Horticultural Science generates and extends knowledge about fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and landscape design for the purpose of increasing food security and food safety, sustaining the environment, enhancing economic vitality, and improving the quality of life for individuals and their communities.

Essential Job Duties:

The Research Associate will be expected to conduct research on postharvest issues of cut flowers, such as roses and specialty cut flowers, unrooted cuttings of numerous vegetatively-propagated species, and bedding and potted flowering plants. Specific research projects may include work with ethylene, botrytis, carbohydrate analysis, and environmental modeling. The successful candidate in this position will be expected to interact with plant physiologists, biochemists, and molecular biologists as part of a multi-investigator effort. The Research Associate will also submit grants on behalf of the PI, work with the granting agencies to develop the projects, write text, create budgets, and submit the proposals, help supervise graduate students and student workers and work with other faculty in the department to develop and implement independent projects.

Other Responsibilities:

Additional responsibilities include annual reporting to funding agencies, supervision of seasonal employees, statistical analysis, presentation and publication of project results, and participation in other project activities.

Minimum Experience and Education:

  • Master’s Degree in horticultural science, plant science or a related field; or a relevant bachelor’s degree and three (3) or more years of relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with staff, faculty, and students.
  • Good organizational skills.
