Description:

The Research Associate – Sensing Materials and Technologies will advance research conducted in the laboratories of Prof. Ted Sargent at University of Toronto.

The incumbent will contribute to the development of research directions and the planning of research activities, and determining the appropriate methodologies with which to carry out identified research goals. The incumbent will engage with research teams to ensure project progress; and will contribute to lab operation, including resource management and equipment procurement related to the research projects.

The incumbent will bring expertise in optical sensors (photodetectors) based on novel materials such as quantum dots. The incumbent will have a proven track record in designing, fabricating, and characterizing such sensors, including with noise, speed of response, and background signals systematically investigated and optimized for.

Goals will include to develop, advance, fund, and steward public-private partnerships related to the research projects. Using scientific and engineering expertise, the incumbent will identify, approach, attract, and secure strong relationships with industry partners engaged in synergistic research and development activities, and organize financial resources and reporting to sponsors. Partners will include government agencies, companies, foundations, individuals, and investors. This position will also require overseeing intellectual property disclosures and patents, collaborations with academic and industrial groups, and the pursuit of commercialization opportunities for the technologies developed in both groups.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in an area of science (such as chemistry or physics), engineering (such as electrical engineering, materials science, computer engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering), computer science, data sciences.
  • 5 years or more of experience in research with optical sensors (photodetectors) based on novel materials such as quantum dots.
  • 5 years or more of experience in the design, fabrication and characterization of optical sensors including with noise, speed of response, and background signals systematically investigated and optimized for.
  • 3 years or more project management experience.
  • Evidence of publications in high-impact journals such as those having I.F. > 25
  • Evidence of experience with invention disclosures and patenting.
  • The position will require versatility and interdisciplinarity in potential applicants.

Note: this is a 1-Year term position, with the possibility of renewal.
