Department Information
The Lachance Lab at Georgia Institute of Technology studies human evolution genomics. Our research group uses computational approaches to understand how genetic disease risks have evolved over recent human history. Additional details about research in the Lachance Lab can be found at https://popgen.gatech.edu.This position is funded by an NIH grant to examine the causes of differences in hereditary disease risks across populations.
Job SummaryProvide basic technical support services required for conducting tests and experiments in a school or research laboratory within the Institute. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: academic and research faculty, co-workers. This position typically will advise and counsel: NA. This position will supervise: NA.
ResponsibilitiesJob Duty 1 -
Gather, compile and summarize data in conjunction with assigned scientific tests, experiments, etc
Job Duty 2 -
Collect and prepare samples for use in assigned tests
Job Duty 3 -
Prepare statistical analyses and maintain related records.
Job Duty 4 -
Operate various equipment used in research studies.
Job Duty 5 -
Perform other duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities
Note: this is a “dry lab” (computational biology) position
Analyze large genome-scale datasets
Test hypotheses in evolutionary medicine using population genetics
Assist with writing journal articles and grants
Coordinate undergrad research projects
Minor administrative tasks
Required QualificationsEducational Requirements
Technical Diploma, Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in anthropology or biology
Required Experience
One to two years of job related experience
SKILLS
This job requires basic knowledge of research lab equipment and support processes and practices. Includes skill in data organization, statistical analysis and use of statistical and scientific computer applications.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Strong writing skills
Experience reading and critiquing primary scientific literature
Ability to work independently
Coding: Python and R
Prior coursework in genetics, evolutionary biology, statistics, and/or bioinformatics
