The Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer (VP/CDO) reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the University’s chief academic officer, with a dual reporting line to the Chancellor. The VP/CDO serves on the Chancellor’s and Provost’s respective leadership cabinets and is tasked with informing and implementing the institution’s strategy, processes, and infrastructure related to building our community together.
The VP/CDO advises campus leaders to create a campus community in which faculty, staff and students feel that they belong and are equipped to thrive in a global society. The VP/CDO takes the lead in enhancing the educational benefits of diversity for students through equitable and effective recruitment, enrollment, and retention. The VP/CDO develops systems that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion across a breadth of university activities that include hiring, training and professional development, promotion and tenure, teaching, research, evaluation, and budgeting and resource allocation. The VP/CDO supports the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost as well as the Chancellor on decision making and messaging on matters related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Senior Director of the Office for Diversity and Inclusion reports directly to the VP/CDO. The Office for Diversity and Inclusion seeks to build understanding across differences, promote the free exchange of ideas, and support the University’s provision of the educational benefits of diversity.
The VP/CDO convenes chief diversity officers in respective units and schools to help them implement Carolina’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.
Master’s degree required, PhD or other terminal degree preferred.
Option for faculty appointment fixed term or professor of the practice.Qualifications and Experience:
The successful candidate will be a recognized leader and will have substantial leadership experience in a university setting with a preference for a candidate with strong, engaged scholarship in a field that supports the University’s strategy around equity and inclusion. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated intellectual and ethical leadership as an innovator, collaborator, and catalyst in mobilizing institutional and community stakeholders to promote equity and inclusion.
The successful candidate will possess a record of success in facilitating effective partnerships. They will have experience leading large-scale change projects within a complex organization and will demonstrate proven experience implementing strategic plans and following up with large scale assessments and reporting. The successful candidate will have the ability to understand, navigate and implement frameworks, policies, laws and regulations. They will have proven success in, or demonstrated aptitude for, external relations and communications; and a willingness to embrace challenges and opportunities.
The successful candidate will demonstrate empathy and real-world experience with the wide range of disciplines, interests and people represented at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and show a deep appreciation for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s public mission. They will demonstrate the ability to implement bold, creative, and innovative initiatives and the vision, emotional intelligence and humility to command the respect and involvement of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s diverse constituents and stakeholders.
