Department Description:

The Division of Comprehensive Oral Health houses several disciplines including, Periodontology, Dental Hygiene, Comprehensive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry/ BioMaterials, Prosthodontics, and Endodontics. The Division Chair and vice-chair manage the operating procedures for the entire division. The Division of Comprehensive Oral Health consists of full-time faculty, part-time faculty, phased retired faculty and adjunct faculty; full-time and part-time staff; DDS, MSc and PhD students; clinical/research fellows and visiting scholars. The Division of Comprehensive Oral Health balances teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities.

Position Description:

The primary purpose of the Dental Hygiene Supervisor is to supervise, hire, plan, organize the work of the other Dental Hygienists in the Division (six positions working in the Dental Faculty Practice) and to provide patient care for the Dental Faculty Practice and the Graduate Clinics as needed. This includes Dental Hygienist scheduling. monitoring/implementing clinical policies and procedures, collecting and analyzing data for patient flows, and chair utilization. This position will be responsible for ensuring that all Dental Hygienists are maintaining performance standards and complying with all administrative and regulatory requirements. The supervisor is responsible for training the Hygienists and ensuring they are equipped with the tools and resources to effectively complete tasks and accomplish programmatic goals. This position will continue to oversee clinical operations, including but not limited to distribution of patients according to care needs, complexity, and workloads. This position will provide continuity of patient care as needed or when other Hygienists are on leave or absent. This position also oversees ordering, stocking, and inventory management of clinical supplies specific to the Hygienists.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing clinical dental hygiene in specialty care areas of dentistry (periodontology, operative, prosthodontics, and endodontics). Comprehensive knowledge of patient care protocols, medical guidelines and clinical procedures in mentioned specialty areas and in advanced dental hygiene treatments. Considerable knowledge of proper patient care management and administrative standards. Ability to apply continual learning of new clinical treatments, techniques and technologies in specialized areas.
Ability to perform specialized patient services consistent with the Dental Hygiene Practice Act in specialty care areas. Ability to assist residents in correctly assessing a problem or in completing the solution. May require ability to advise on and help evaluate procedures followed in the resident clinic. Ability to train residents and staff in effective patient education methods; may require ability to develop educational materials.
Ability to collect and record patient data; schedule additional appointments as needed. Ability to maintain accurate and timely patient information. Ability to identify problems and opportunities to improve patient data collection. Ability to ensure accuracy and timely entry of patient information by dental assistants; ability to recommend improvements and changes in information/records administration.
Ability to instruct residents of the School of Dentistry in proper utilization of the dental hygienist in private practice. Ability to monitor the performance of dental residents; ability to report findings as needed. Ability to develop and design the education curriculum.
Ability to design programs; ability to work with other departments and organizations to coordinate programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous Dental Hygienist experience is essential. Excellent communication skills and be able to work with, and exercise, tact and diplomacy with a wide variety of individuals (including staff, faculty and patients) and to be flexible in working in many different specialty clinics including Periodontology, Comprehensive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Endodontics. Must be customer service oriented and patient care driven. The position requires the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to negotiate to achieve successful results, and to thrive in a fast-paced environment while delivering high-level customer service. The position requires strong professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to work with others, change tasks frequently and to supervise others is essential.
