The Department of Pharmacology is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to assist investigators with in vitro and cell-based assay systems focusing on cultured adult human neurons (iNeurons) derived from adult fibroblasts, and the reengagement of cell cycle associated proteins and other signaling effectors. This position is within the laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth R. Sharlow. The individual will provide research support for ongoing research projects related to the derivation, development and refinement of neuronal populations and their use in novel assay systems. Experience with RT-PCR, drug/peptide handling, mammalian cell culture and/or sterile technique and/or additional molecular biology experience is required. A Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline and at least 3 years of laboratory experience in an academic or industrial laboratory setting is required; six or more years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree. Familiarity with laboratory equipment (i.e., centrifuges, pH meters, pipettors), and the ability to perform calculations and carry out experiments is required. Experience with Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Powerpoint and Excel) is also required. Experience with GraphPad Prism is preferred.
What you will do:
- Implement experiments using iNeurons.
- Help derive iNeuron populations.
- Use sterile technique and perform EC50/IC50 determinations.
- Perform mammalian cell culture.
- Perform Western blotting and use antibodies.
- Perform data analysis and visualization.
- Perform immunofluorescence.
- Present data at laboratory meetings.
Laboratory Maintenance and General Duties:
- Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance
- Make buffers and other reagents
- Maintain a laboratory notebook
- Be available to assist principal investigators as needed
Ordering, Purchasing, and Shipping:
- Process purchases for the lab
- Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products
- Return damaged or incorrect items
- Ship items to contract research organizations
** This is a restricted position and continuation will be based on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. **
Anticipated Hiring Range: $35,000 - $38,000

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
