The Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DDEI) provides leadership, vision, and support for our collective diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts at the University of Virginia (UVA). The DDEI is seeking a professional focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion education and development to join us in our growing team, and equity-focused community, as we seek to institutionalize the inclusive excellence framework at UVA alongside our affiliated organizations and community partners.
The DDEI is looking for a Director of Diversity Education to lead effective diversity, equity, and inclusion educational workshops and programs across the University, working in partnership with Human Resources, the Provost Office faculty development team, the Center for Teaching Excellence, UVA expert faculty and fellows, the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Office, and Charlottesville-Albemarle community members. This will include work to support an annual diversity learning series, cultural heritage education, anti-racist education, and leadership development to support equity-minded policy and decision-making. The Director will also assist civil rights policy officers at the University in coordinating and evaluating educational efforts aimed at preventing and addressing discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and sexual misconduct.
We are seeking an individual who has a demonstrated record of consultative and responsive educational design, as well as experiences with sustained programs building long term capacity and capability for organizational change. This includes awareness and/or experience in program assessment in relation to knowledge and skills building, retention, and organizational behavioral change. The Director will be asked to facilitate interactive sessions, produce self-paced digital content, and lead “train-the-trainer” type sessions for program and dialogue facilitators.
The Director will need to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate the capability and development needs in the areas of inclusive competence and capacity across the full breadth of stakeholders associated with an institution of higher education and an academic hospital. Knowledge of, as well as experience with, higher education governance structures and ecologies will be beneficial to the role. The Director will be asked to build and regularly convene a community of diversity, equity, and inclusion educators/facilitators from across the University and its constituencies to grow out the impact of DDEI offerings.
Alongside the existing community of learning and development practitioners at the University, the Director will have the support of a growing team of professionals in the DDEI, including a communications director and an assistant director for data analytics and assessment. The Director will also have access to, and influence around, an operating budget for the diversity learning series, anti-racist education, and cultural heritage programming.
We are interested in reviewing candidates with a broad range and combination of experiences, education, and qualifications. Experience with or certification in the use of diversity, equity, and inclusion assessments as well as e-learning authoring tools will be beneficial to the role. The minimum education and experience requirement for this position is a Master’s degree and seven years of related experience. Related experience can include training via fellowships and volunteering with non-profit organizations and community groups that are relevant to the work of the position.
