Departmental Overview

The Statistics Department in the Division of Math & Physical Sciences, College of Letters & Sciences, was originally established in 1938 as the first center in the country for statistical research. Since its inception, graduates and faculty of Berkeley have shaped the foundations of statistics. The department continues to be recognized as one of the preeminent centers for Probability and Statistics in the world. The department places a strong emphasis on research through partnerships working with institutions and industry partners that include; LBNL (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab), the Sloan Institute, the Simons Institute, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS), Google, Microsoft, Citadel, State Street, Genentech and departments such as; Bioengineering, Biostatistics, Economics, EECS (Electrical Engineering & Computer Science), Demography, IB (Integrative Biology), Mathematics, MCB (Molecular & Cell Biology), and Physics.

The Systems Administrator in Statistics administers and supports instructional and research computing for the Statistical Computing Facility (SCF) and the Econometrics Laboratory (EML), a unit of the Institute of Business and Economic Research (IBER) located in the Department of Economics. This person is the technical administrator for hardware, operating systems, and network management for client groups including faculty, grad students, researchers, and visitors, in addition to providing frontline technical support.

Responsibilities
  • Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) to improve the performance and reliability of the system.
  • Configures and operates unattended operating system upgrades.
  • Prepares and applies security updates and patches.
  • Maintains and supports current releases of a wide range of application packages.
  • Performs complex analysis to acquire, install, modify and support Linux, Mac OS X, databases, utilities and Internet/intranet-related tools.
  • Provides operational and software support for the Statistical Computing Facility and the Econometrics Laboratory. Interacts with a diverse group of faculty, researchers, students, and visitors to implement, install, and maintain software and hardware.
  • Administers the instructional and research computers and makes recommendations for purchase or upgrade of new computer hardware.
  • Prepares course related software for machines within the instructional lab rooms.
  • Assists in building, configuring, and installing statistical applications, libraries, toolboxes, and modules.
  • Creates and configures cloud-based virtual machines using the vendors' APIs and web interfaces.
  • Performs complex systems programming and systems support activities.
  • Writes custom user and system software.
  • Develops complex web applications in support of users and departmental staff.
  • Provides development support to user community using a background of Python, R, C, C++, Matlab, and a variety of scripting languages.
  • Monitors and configures cluster management and execution software.
  • Performs complex security control activities to prevent hackers from infiltrating campus systems.
  • Tracks, evaluates, verifies, and mitigates relevant security issues.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining procedures for host-based and network-based vulnerability analysis and intrusion detection.
  • Administers security policies to control access to systems.
  • Monitors hardware for failures and works with vendors to identify faulty components and to obtain replacement hardware, such as routers and switches.
  • Operates internal data communications systems, including LAN switch gear.
  • Is available after hours to resolve both planned and unplanned outages.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner across the organization and at different levels and to various and diverse audiences.
  • Has the knowledge, skill, and ability to identify systems-related issues and actions needed to improve or correct performance.
  • Has knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Can acquire new skills and knowledge to evaluate, adapt, and deploy new technologies as they emerge.
  • Has the necessary cultural fluency skills to cultivate and nurture relationships across various audiences in order to provide excellent customer service
  • Experience with Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu or Red Hat. Experience deploying Mac OS X clients in an enterprise environment.
  • Other UNIX operating system experience will be considered.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with UNIX scripting with Bourne shell and UNIX command-line tools.
  • Experience with networking and security.
  • Experience configuring, deploying, and troubleshooting NFS, SMB, LDAP, DHCP, DNS, and HTTP servers.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • At least 5 years of experience and/or equivalent experience/training in system administration, including network administration, data security, application development and support, and user support.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with revision control systems such as git.
  • Experience with cluster software such as SLURM or Torque.
  • Familiarity provisioning technologies such as ansible, chef, or puppet.
  • Familiarity compiling and installing software.
  • Familiarity with container and virtualization tools and technologies such as docker, Kubernetes, kvm, VirtualBox, and VMware.
  • Familiarity with tape backup systems and disaster recovery.
  • Familiarity with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite.
  • Familiarity with APIs or RESTful web services.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
