Program Description

Developed by academic and clinical nursing experts, the UMHC Nurse Residency Program is a comprehensive orientation program that transitions the novice nurse to the role of an advanced beginner in a collaborative learning environment. The UMHC Nurse Residency Program is a 6-month competency-based program that includes evidence-based lectures, online learning modules, high-fidelity simulation experience, and an individualized preceptorship program. Each nurse is mentored throughout the program by supportive staff, leaders, and academic experts.

As part of the Titan ’Canes Nurse Residency Program, the new graduate nurses will receive the following:

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) Dysrhythmia Interpretation
  • Epic Training and Validation
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification
  • High-Fidelity Simulation
  • Skills practice with the hospital equipment
  • Individualized Coaching with a Trained Clinical Preceptor

Candidate Requirements

  • Registered Nurses (RN) with less than 12 months of full-time RN experience (less than 2,080 hours) by hire date.
  • All RNs (or international equivalent) who have graduated from an accredited school of nursing (ACEN or CCNE).
  • BSN required.
  • Current unencumbered RN license.
  • Willingness to fulfill a 24-month agreement on the unit for which they are hired, and 36-month with the organization.

Classroom, Skills Training and Self – Study

  • Combines lecture, hands-on skills training, home study and facility-specific policies and protocols. Training provided by facility subject matter experts.

Simulation Training

  • The state-of-the-art simulation training provides hands-on experience to reinforce critical thinking and prioritization skills.

Clinical Preceptorship

  • Individualized/Unit specific training at the hospital, each new graduate is assigned to a qualified preceptor to train and acclimate the resident to their new role as a Registered Nurse.

Professional Development

  • Residents will be paired with a trained mentor for integration and socialization into the culture of professional nursing, attend monthly seminars, and complete an evidence-based poster presentation.

  • Official Academic transcripts or copy of Nursing Diploma
  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation (Professors or Nurse Director/Manager preferred)
  • Florida Registered Nurse License or ATT Letter ( must test and pass NCLEX before Friday, February 12, 2021.)
  • Current BLS & ACLS certification(s)

New Graduate Nurse Residency program will start Monday, March 1, 2021.

Candidates who are accepted into the New Graduate Nurse Residency Program are required to sign a three (3) year full time employment contract with the University of Miami Hospital. Default in contract will result in repayment to the University of Miami Hospital for all cost related to program.
