Associate Professor/Professor, Senior Scholar of Global Communication
School of Communication
University of Miami

The University of Miami’s (UM) School of Communication (SoC) is seeking a senior scholar of global communication at the Associate or Full Professor level to join our faculty of globally engaged, social justice-oriented scholars and creative professionals. This person will excel at leadership, research, teaching, and service. This tenured scholar will be expected to contribute to the mission of the school relevant to social justice, and to contribute to the Center for Communication, Culture, and Change. The position requires a PhD or other terminal degree in Communication, Media Studies, Journalism, or a related field. Depending on the focus of research, this position will be integrated with one of our existing departments, including Cinematic Arts, Communication Studies, Interactive Media, Journalism and Media Management, or Strategic Communication.

UM is considered among the top tier institutions of higher education in the United States. The university’s research strengths include climate and resiliency, global health, migration and multiple approaches to understanding communication, media and cultural industries. At the U, we are committed to attracting a talented workforce to support our shared purpose of transforming lives through teaching, research, and service. Through our values of Diversity, Integrity, Responsibility, Excellence, Compassion, Creativity and Teamwork (DIRECCT), we strive to create an environment where everyone contributes in making UM a great place to work. We are one of the largest private employers in Miami-Dade County; home to more than 13,400 faculty and staff from all over the world.

The School of Communication’s multicultural, intellectually diverse faculty is dedicated to creating new and better understandings about how communication can contribute to a more just and sustainable world. Many colleagues enthusiastically work in the Global sphere, where communication for social justice is a driving and integrative force. We value theoretically grounded and socially engaged approaches to research and pedagogy. The successful candidate will join a faculty that enthusiastically seeks to leverage the university’s intellectual and geo-cultural endowments to find solutions to the world’s most-pressing problems.

The SoC is set on a vibrant campus in a cosmopolitan city with abundant opportunities for innovative, impactful research in global communication. As a global city on the rim of Latin America and the Caribbean, Miami is a cultural crossroads and transnational hub that houses important media and communications industry headquarters, a lively arts scene, and immigrants from every country in the Americas as well as all other regions of the world. Working “in” and “at” Miami gives communication scholars a unique lens and supportive environment for engaging global issues across multiple levels.

Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, contact information for five references, and three statements, each no longer than two pages. These include a research statement including accomplishments and interests; a teaching statement considering philosophy and pedagogical approaches; and a diversity statement describing strategies to promote inclusion and equity in leadership, service, teaching, and research.
