Postdoctoral Research Associate
POSITION SUMMARY: Postdoctoral Research Associate Position, International Center for Energy, Environment and Sustainability (InCEES), Washington University in St. Louis
Beginning in October 2020 with the Midwest Climate Summit, we seek to launch the Midwest Climate Collaborative, a collective movement to accelerate climate action in the Midwest by creating evidence, catalyzing action, informing public knowledge and public policy, and developing the future leaders needed to sustain and expand this work.
A position is available for a postdoctoral research associate with an interest in practitioner- and community-focused climate change work to help lead a planning process to identify key climate priorities for the U.S. Midwest. Working with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and community members, the postdoctoral research associate will help lead a multi-stage process of literature and data review, key stakeholder interviews and surveys, and community engagement that will identify and define immediate and long-term climate priorities for the Midwest. Based on similar work done and published on behalf of the Georgia Climate Project, the postdoc would work to synthesize what is already known about climate impacts and solutions in the Midwest; to develop a climate research agenda focused on strategies that can inform and accelerate climate mitigation and adaptation in the Midwest in the next 10 years; and to build a network of climate researchers across the Midwest to facilitate research collaboration, research translation, and in so doing, enhance the profile of Midwestern climate experts.
The postdoctoral research associate will also be asked to help produce supporting data and documentation on current climate impacts and challenges to inform planning efforts. Results will be shared through journal publications, reports, and publicly available communication resources.
Data, reports, and publications created and assembled will help identify key research areas to be pursued as part of work associated with the Midwest Climate Summit, OneSTL Regional Climate work, and other local/regional efforts across the Midwest.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working with and training under the supervision of the Interim Director of InCEES, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will be helping to lead a planning initiative to identify key climate priorities for the U.S. Midwest. Primary duties include:
• Manage, design, and conduct a regional climate survey, including interviewing stakeholders and analysis of resulting data.
• Develop reports and communications detailing project status, conclusions, and next steps.

• Present scientific work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.
• Evaluate research findings and report results.
• Conscientious discharge of his/her research responsibilities.
• Maintain conformity with ethical standards in research.
• Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures, and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the environmental sciences, environmental policy, or related field.
• Knowledge of Midwest Climate Issues.
• Experience with survey design and analysis.
• Prior experience with inter/transdisciplinary climate-related work and community-based participatory research methods.
• Excellent team and service orientation with proven oral and written communication skills.
• Ideal candidate will have proven ability to work directly with cross-sector partners, faculty, researchers, staff, and other technical experts.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work with and effectively tailor communications to people with a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and needs.
• Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and skills for navigating issues of power, privilege, identity, racial equity, and cultural humility.
