General Description

Under the direction of the Manager, Infrastructure & Security, plans, prioritizes and oversees a District-wide voice, video and WAN telecommunications network; develops and directs telecommunication services; installs, manages, upgrades, and repairs network/telecommunications hardware and software; plans, organizes, and monitors network and telecommunication operations.

Job Duties

Job duties of the Network Analyst include:

Gathers and analyzes information regarding the college local/wide area network and requirements and develops or modifies these systems to support college computational needs.

Designs, tests, maintains, and upgrades a variety of hardware and software; provides information system planning by researching technologies related cable plant development; provides technical analysis of new systems and upgrades; voice/video/data network hardware and software troubleshooting.

Assembles, installs, configures, tests, implements, repairs, trouble-shoots and maintains voice/data networking equipment as assigned; maps, installs, maintains, and upgrades data, voice, fiber and other cabling; assists with the selection of vendors involved in assigned projects; performs network troubleshooting by maintaining network equipment including servers, routers, bridges, firewalls, VPNs, wireless devices, cloud network services, VoIP, PoE, load balancers, MAUs, repeaters, hubs, switches, cabling, workstations and other associated equipment necessary for network operation.

Analyzes problems; identifies and troubleshoots equipment problems; operates telephone diagnostic instruments; tests equipment, advises users; instructs users on telephone use; interfaces with other telephone agencies; maintains a schedule of preventive maintenance; keeps records of readings; responds to on-call emergencies.

Works with telecom service providers and vendors to ensure end-to-end connectivity activity and troubleshooting data com outages and routing issues.

Conducts feasibility studies; develops system, hardware and cost requirements and proposed time frames; simulates hardware and software problems; tests and evaluates alternative solutions, and recommends and implements appropriate operating systems, software applications and hardware; learns new software programs.

Prepares project documentation; maintains project files as appropriate.

Communicates with District personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities, exchange information, and resolve issues or concerns.

Installs, upgrades, and repairs a variety of equipment as needed; sets up and tests a variety of voice and data equipment.

Operates a variety of equipment including microcomputers, modems, multiplexors, hubs, bridges, volt-ohm meter, hand set, line and cable testing equipment, power and hand tools, and ladders.

Assures compliance with federal, State and local codes, follows appropriate safety procedures and copyright laws.

Defines project objectives, resources, time span and budget requirements; breaks project work into phases and tasks; estimates time and effort for each task; determines interdependencies and sequences of tasks; allocates resources to tasks; schedules work and coordinates project teams and monitors progress; reports project status; communicates with team members.

Strives for a continuously improved level of formal and self-training in order to remain effective with systems and equipment being supported and provides a continuous improvement in customer satisfaction.

Provides training and technical assistance via telephone, electronic mail or in person; resolves trouble calls and advises users of appropriate solutions and alternatives.

Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools, tests equipment and computers, and communications equipment involved in the installation, repair and maintenance of the District's communications equipment and systems.

Stays current regarding technical advances in the field by reading trade journals, technological books, and manuals for hardware/software; attends conferences, workshops, and meetings.

Master and support new software and hardware products.

Utilize the District's integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:

two-year technical degree in computer science, information science, or

telecommunications and three years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and operations of networks, desktop computing and telecommunications systems.

An additional year of experience may be substituted for a year of education or vice versa.
