The Clemson University College of Education invites applications for a Science Education position in the Department of Teaching and Learning. We seek colleagues who have faculty, research, grant, and scholarship experience that would merit tenure at the level of Associate Professor at Clemson University. Consistent with the University's land grant mission, the College of Education and the Teaching and Learning Department are dedicated to preparing critically reflective professionals with strong commitments to access and equity. Clemson University's College of Education is especially focused on serving members of underrepresented, diverse, and marginalized populations. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and engaged faculty committed to fulfilling this mission through high quality research, teaching, and service. This nine-month, full-time, tenure-line appointment begins August 2021. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position is not location-bound, as a remote appointment will be given consideration.

Interested scholars could represent a broad range of research interests relevant to science education, with preference given to scholars who have experience partnering with underserved school communities across the state or the nation. We welcome applications from scholars whose instructional experiences span grade levels from early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary. Applicants would have opportunities for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The science education position emphasizes primary faculty engagement across elementary, middle level and secondary education programs. Science education faculty will work in collaboration to support all programs. Applicants must have an understanding or some experiences with STEAM/STEM. Applicants for this position should articulate a desire to teach education and methods courses for undergraduate prospective teachers as a faculty member in one of these programs. A strong science content background is essential for being effective in this role.

Responsibilities:

The new faculty member will be expected to have and maintain an active scholarly research agenda, seek and secure external grant funding, cultivate grant-funded research collaborations, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in science education, advise graduate students in their research and serve on doctoral committees, contribute leadership and writing to program area SPA reports, provide service to the department, college, and university, and help support the work of science teachers in the state.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in science education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field

  • Substantive PreK-12 science teaching experience

  • Record of scholarly accomplishment in research, teaching, and service

  • Record of securing external funding relative to increasingly significant projects

  • Understanding of STEAM/STEM education

  • Ability to teach science education courses for prospective teachers in multiple program areas, masters level courses, and core doctoral courses for curriculum and instruction Ph.D. students

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and/or mentoring students from underrepresented groups and/or communities

  • Evidence of a major in a science field or equivalent is required (at least 30 semester units of science coursework at the undergraduate level)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have or previously held a PreK-12 teaching credential

  • Demonstrated instructional alignment with the National Research Council's Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards

  • Experience working with U.S. public school teachers

  • Experience building collaborative grant partnerships

  • Experience mentoring doctoral students to degree completion

  • Experience working on collaborative teams

  • Experience with asynchronous learning, hyflex or hybrid course development, and other online teaching methods
