Position Description:

The Business Officer is the Director of Business Operations within the UNC School of Law’s Institute for Innovation (“the Institute”). The Institute is a sub-unit of UNC School of Law and, although it is affiliated with UNC School of Law’s Clinical Programs, it is separately located in downtown Chapel Hill, N.C. and has a different programmatic focus.

The Institute houses three law clinics (the Startup NC Law Clinic, the Community Development Law Clinic, and the Intellectual Property Clinic) that together serve the legal needs of for-profit and non-profit entrepreneurial ventures. The clinics provide law students with opportunities to learn legal theory and legal practice while also providing much needed legal assistance to under-represented and under-resourced individuals and communities. The Institute also sponsors and organizes a range of activities to teach law students and others about entrepreneurship and to link law students to the broader entrepreneurship community.

The Director of Business Operations is responsible for the complicated logistics of a unit that combines an academic program with what is in essence a medium-sized law firm. The Director of Business Operations provides business and administrative support to the Institute faculty, both in regard to their clinical legal practice and their teaching. This individual will coordinate with existing Clinical Programs staff and representatives of various UNC School of Law departments including Finance and Human Resources. The Director of Business Operations works with Institute faculty members to train approximately 48 law students each academic year in law office operations, and helps coordinate an academic program focusing on entrepreneurship. The Director of Business Operations organizes numerous events including a speaker series and meetings of the Institute’s prominent board of advisers, and will take a lead role in reporting the Institute’s activities to its funders. The Director of Business Operations is responsible for satisfying various law office compliance matters, including ensuring faculty members and students maintain their certifications under North Carolina Bar rules. The Director of Business Operations supervises work study students each semester. Additionally, the Director of Business Operations takes a lead role in communicating, both orally and in writing, with the Institute’s numerous stakeholders. The Director of Business Operations must work independently and proactively with great attention to detail to ensure smooth office operations, deadline adherence, and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or related business area; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Ability to liaise and work collaboratively with the numerous departments and units that comprise a top-tier school.

Preferred Qualifications:

Positions at this level are business officer professionals who apply general business knowledge to address the business needs of the Institute. Because this position requires excellent communication skills, preference will be given to candidates with previous experience writing effective communications to various levels of leadership, constituents and/or stakeholders in a university or college setting. Preference will also be given to individuals with previous budgeting and finance experience. It is also preferred that a candidate in this role will have some working knowledge of the legal profession and/or the legal system, particularly in regards to under-resourced individuals and communities.
