To direct the staff and operations of the Austin Community College (ACC) systems engineering department, and to provide stable, secure, and reliable systems infrastructure to faculty, staff, and students.Description of Duties and TasksEssential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Supervises, trains, coaches, directs, coordinates, and disciplines personnel while adhering to organizational human resource policies and procedures as well as related employment laws. Recommends hire and termination personnel actions for positions supervised.
  • Provides college-wide leadership and direction in all areas of technology related system engineering, including strategic planning and district-wide collaboration, upgrades, and life-cycle planning.
  • Directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of district-wide systems infrastructure and data center operations.
  • Analyzes ACC system infrastructure functionality; identifies and resolves problems; evaluates trends and recommends operational, procedural, and technical improvements; coordinates integration between systems; directs the execution of system upgrades; identifies and communicates strategies, goals, and objectives.
  • Assures functionality, compatibility, and performance of ACC computer systems; reviews college growth strategies and determines ACC system resource requirements, program goals, and deliverables; develops strategic plans and tactical goals; determines scope and priorities of projects.
  • Meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues.
  • Remains current on trends and technology changes; evaluates new hardware, software, and related equipment for functionality and fit to current operating environment and user needs.
  • Analyzes system functions and evaluates the services provided; develops plan of action and recommendations; identifies milestones and issues to be addressed, and generates reports as required.
  • Manages and provides leadership and guidance to ACC systems engineering staff; develops priorities and assigns tasks and projects; ensures that all issues are addressed and resolved.
  • KnowledgeMust possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.


    Financial, personnel, and administrative functions of a technology department. Budget planning, projection, and analysis. Project management methodologies. Principles and techniques for management of organization-wide projects. Working knowledge of information technology and security best practices.
    Working knowledge of all aspects of technology related to systems engineering and related technologies. Must understand and be familiar with current industry and market trends related to network engineering. Current trends and information sources for managing network systems. Telecommunications principles, regulations, and system management strategies. Management principles, practices, and methods.
    Forward looking approach to architect, engineer, and implement future adaptive system architecture and technology to include but not limited to server build standards, virtual environment design, and other methods to modernize the system infrastructure.SkillsMust possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    Okta implementation and administration. Windows 10 implementation and administration. Physical and virtual server deployment and maintenance.
    VDI on VxRail and Nutanix, Clustered environments, Colocation, Migration, Security in a geographically distributed environment serving 3000 Employees and 80K clients. AWS and infrastructure management knowledge.Required Work Experience


  • Ten years related work experience and at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Completion of the ACC Supervisor Certificate Series Program will satisfy the supervisory experience required for this position.
  • Preferred Work Experience


    Twelve years related work experience. Experience managing systems technology at a multi-campus organization.

  • Bachelor's degree.

    Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

    Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation for travel in the Austin area as required.Physical Requirements


    Work is performed in a standard office or similar environment. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling.

    This is a benefit eligible position funded through January 31, 2022 and is subject to renewal. The College is unable to support candidates who require sponsorship to work in the United States.
    ACC Benefits OverviewFull-time Faculty and Staffing Table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the College are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short and long term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.

    ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by Federal law.
