Description

The Giam Lab is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the laboratory as a research specialist. The research specialist will contribute and assist several ongoing projects in aquatic macroecology and conservation biogeography. The research specialist will be tasked with updating existing datasets by collating and processing new data for analysis as well as contributing to analyses and participating in the drafting of scientific manuscripts. They will also assist in performing lab administrative tasks such as scheduling of meetings and organization of lab datasets, etc., and occasionally assist in performing research work in the field. Our lab group is diverse, inclusive, and collaborative, and there will be opportunities for the research specialist to collaborate and participate in different projects in the lab.

 

Duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to: 

  1. Searching and collation for data to support ongoing projects
  2. Extracting data from published literature
  3. Processing data and getting data ready for analytical pipeline
  4. Basic statistical and GIS analysis
  5. Assisting in lab administrative tasks like scheduling of meetings, ordering of supplies, organization of lab datasets, emailing students and collaborators
  6. Preparation of reports
  7. Contributing to preparation of manuscripts


QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology or Conservation Science or in a related field
  2. One year of undergraduate and/or post-graduate research experience in collating environmental and biological data from published literature, processing data, and analyzing data in R and ArcGIS
  3. Ability to work independently within established guidelines provided by supervisor to search, collate and process environmental and biological data in an efficient manner
  4. Knowledge of the literature in quantitative ecology and aquatic conservation science
  5. Proficient skills in processing and analyzing data in R and ArcGIS
  6. Ability to effectively communicate information and coordinate activities with research team members.
  7. Excellent organizational skills to order lab supplies and maintain lab databases.
  8. Ability to perform research in the field.
  9. Ability to operate a car
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with scientific publishing as demonstrated by authorship on published papers or manuscripts that are in preparation
  2. Two years of undergraduate and/or post-graduate research experience in collating environmental and biological data from published literature, processing data, and analyzing data in R and ArcGIS
  3. One summer of experience conducting ecological research in the field
