Responsibilities:

Maintain and repair mechanical scientific equipment for faculty, staff, and students involved in teaching and research at UT Knoxville, College of Veterinary Medicine, the Institute of Agriculture, and UT Research Center.  Diagnose and repair scientific equipment especially autoclaves, which are essential for the research and teaching missions of the university.  Overseeing, repairing cage washers, surgery tables, vacuum pumps, freeze dryers and glassware washers as well as other scientific equipment which may include manufacturing, ordering, or machining new parts. 

This position is responsible for overseeing and assisting with the duties of other positions in the machine shop as needed.  This position will serve as the assistant manager of the Biology Service Facility.

Performs extensive diagnosis and repairs on malfunctioning mechanic and pneumatic equipment which includes autoclaves, cage washers, surgery tables, vacuum pumps, freeze dryers, and glassware washers for faculty, staff, and students.  Provides technical training, instructions, and assistance to other technicians within the machine shop.

Develop yearly preventive maintenance schedules and carry out maintenance on mechanical equipment.  Handle duties of the manager's position when the manager is not available or asked to do so by the manager.



QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or vocational/technical training

Experience:

Five years machining training, welding training (arc, tig, mig), or plumbing.

Excellent mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.

 

Preferred qualifications:

One year in a supervisory position.

Two years in research equipment repair and machine shop.

Two years autoclave, scientific glassware washer, and cage washer repair and maintenance.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge with safety skills of working with lathes, milling machines, drill presses, band saws, boring machines, rebuilding valves, plumbing, hand tools, electrical meters, and tearing down equipment.  Strong leadership skills, a good mechanical aptitude and the knowledge of overseeing the operations of a machine shop.
