Digital Media Technician (Analyst, IT)
The Digital Media Technician provides high quality, technology-centric services and support to the Duke academic community. This position has an emphasis on the support of Duke Office of Information Technology makerspaces: The Co-Lab Studios. Services within this lab include digital modeling (2D and 3D CAD) and fabrication (3D printing and scanning, CNC routing and milling, waterjet, and laser cutting), analog making (drilling, cutting, assembling, sewing), physical computing (Arduino, Raspberry Pi), as well as basic electronics (breadboarding, soldering, circuit building and testing). This lab is staffed primarily by student workers, and this position involves assisting with the training and oversight of those positions. The Digital Media Technician also assists with the support of other Co-Lab objectives such as training through the Roots program (preparation for and cleanup after in-person workshops, co-leading workshops), training through other project-based learning initiatives (assembling project kits, designing projects and documentation) VR/AR/gaming, and other emerging technologies. This position reports to the Manager of Co-Lab studios.
DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED:
- Provide customer service, support, and training to students, faculty, and staff at the Co-Lab Studio, including helping them use equipment, answering questions they might have about services, and referring them elsewhere when needed.
- Maintain and support digital fabrication equipment fleet including computers, 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and small electronics. This includes hands-on work such as repairing and upgrading machines and electronics, as well as coordinating IT work such as resolving network and software problems.
- Propose and carry-out projects that serve as demonstrations of technology that can be used to demonstrate concepts and safety techniques, teach, or inspire.
- Perform day-to-day facilities management tasks such as cleaning equipment, surfaces, sweeping floors, and other functions that ensure the positive presentation of the space.
- Manage inventory of equipment, spare parts, and consumables as well as restocking and asset security.
- Provide oversight of hourly student staff, including scheduling, shift changes, and shift-to-shift communication. Assist with supervising the students and ensuring that they are meeting expectations.
- Ensure the timely processing of jobs submitted through the 3D printing service and facilitate customer communication.
- Create and update technical documentation related to operations, processes and equipment within the facility.
- Conduct facilities tours and other walk-throughs of the facility for customers
- Perform other duties as required
- 4-year degree or equivalent relevant experience preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
SKILLS and EXPERIENCE
- Basic understanding of fundamental equipment servicing and repair, including the use of hand and power tools to service broken equipment
- Basic understanding of how to work in a workshop environment, including basic safety practices, equipment management, and organization
- Familiarity with digital modeling and multimedia software
- Knowledge of Windows and Mac OS platforms
- Understanding of modern network technologies including IPAM and Ethernet
- Ability to work independently and self-start
- Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving history
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, and twist at times when servicing machines
- Five years operational and technical experience with technology systems
- Experience in an academic environment
- Experience working with desktop rapid prototyping technologies such as SL and FDM 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machine tools and their associated computer programs
- Strong knowledge of electronics/circuit design
