Educational and Experience Requirement:Bachelor’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, education, psychology, social work, or a related field from an accredited institution. Master’s degree is desirable. Two years of experience in a related area, preferably, in a post-secondary educational setting. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position:Develops, facilitates, monitors, adjusts and coordinates Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) services for eligible students.
Primary Responsibilities:Reviews medical, psychological, and educational documentation submitted by applicants for Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) services. Conducts disability intake appointments with prospective clients. Develops, facilitates, monitors, and adjusts accommodation plans for eligible clients. Consults with clients, instructors, and SSD Director regarding implementation and effectiveness of accommodation plans. Advises students regarding grievance procedures and consults with SSD Director regarding student grievances. Represents department at college preview days, new student orientations, and related functions. Provides outreach presentations on SSD services and related topics to Sam Houston State University (SHSU) community. Promotes disability awareness on campus. Represents department on University committees. Assists SSD Director with departmental assessments. Maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in post-secondary, student disability services. Proctors exams as needed. Assists with service provision and exam proctoring at satellite campuses, including The Woodlands Center-SHSU and the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:Requires knowledge and skill sufficient to evaluate student accommodation requests and supporting documentation, including psychological/educational assessments. Knowledge of current trends in disability law and best practices in post-secondary disability services preferred. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills, reading and computer skills. Interacts effectively with diverse populations and various departments of the university. Work schedule may vary from normal working hours as required by outreach functions, special projects, and service provision at satellite campuses. Some travel to SHSU satellite campuses may be required to assist with service provision and exam proctoring.
