Departmental Overview

The California Social Welfare Education Center (CalSWEC) is a training and evaluation unit of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Social Welfare. As the nation's largest statewide consortium of social work educators and practitioners, CalSWEC's goal is to support and enhance the delivery of effective, culturally competent services in California's public systems of care. CalSWEC's work include pre-service social work education and training and student support projects, professional inservice training projects, and workforce development-related program evaluation and applied research projects in the arenas of child welfare, behavioral health, and services for aging and vulnerable adults. CalSWEC facilitates and supports statewide partnerships for the education and training of social workers to ensure culturally responsive, effective, and high-quality health and social service delivery to the people of California.

CalSWEC collaborates with 22 universities as well as partners and stakeholders that include the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), the County Welfare Directors Association (CWDA), the County Behavioral Health Directors Association (CBHDA), California's Regional Training Academies, the California chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and other advocacy groups and foundations focused on workforce development for California's public systems of care.

CalSWEC seeks to hire a .6 FTE Digital Communications Specialist to serve the department. Under the direction of the Center Director and in close collaboration with CalSWEC's Leadership Team, the incumbent will design and format a variety of digital communication projects to share the department's work and products for various projects and events. The incumbent will also create content for CalSWEC's website and contribute to content for various online curricula and other materials.

  • In consultation with CalSWEC staff, produces design and layout for a variety of web applications, as well as information architecture.
  • Designs and develops content for digital and in-person events, including but not limited to promotional flyers, programs, meeting content, infographics, electronic newsletters, events and updates for CalSWEC stakeholders, funders and students and other materials as requested.
  • Edits a variety of written and digital reports as requested for layout, content, grammar, flow and consistency.
  • Meets and consults with CalSWEC staff on a variety of digital communications projects including moderately complex assignments; develops, presents, and recommends web content, site architecture and visual material.
  • Makes ongoing recommendations/suggestions for website content.
  • Accountable for ensuring technical accuracy and understandability of web/digital content.
  • Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art technical and other web-related equipment, requirements and developments (for example, accessibility issues) and recommends and as directed, takes action to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews/modifies CalSWEC online curricula for accessibility issues as requested.
  • Manages CalSWEC's social media presence: Twitter, Facebook others as identified.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong writing, research and copywriting skills necessary to prepare a variety of documents/curricula for CalSWEC's audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
  • Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites and other digital materials that provide content consistent with CalSWEC's message and in keeping with CalSWEC's management directives and funder objectives.
  • Thorough understanding of organization's processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications.
  • Strong technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills in collaboration.
  • Ability to handle small to large multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
  • Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work, including experience using Mailchimp, Constant Contact, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Canva and other tools.
  • Time and project management skills to effectively establish priorities and meet completing deadlines.

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. At 60% FTE (24 hours per week), annual salary is commensurate with experience between the range of $49,500.00 - $52,500.00.

This is a 12-month, part-time, 24-hours per week, Contract (temporary) position.
