POSITION: Full-time, with faculty rank; continuing status track; 11-month faculty appointment in the School of Humanities, Religion, and Social Sciences.

DESCRIPTION

The Biblical and Theological Studies program seeks to provide students with opportunities to understand, delight in and witness to the Scriptures as normative for faith and life, in conversation with the Anabaptist-Mennonite and Evangelical traditions, the larger Christian church, and the world. It seeks to instill a sense of and appreciation for the breadth of the Kingdom of God, with its great diversity of backgrounds, points of view, and religious affiliations. All Fresno Pacific University students are required to take two Biblical Studies courses, intended to provide students with both academic and practical opportunities for learning and growth within the broader community of Fresno Pacific University’s General Education program. Courses are designed to promote improvement of skills for reading and understanding the Bible in its literary and historical contexts as well as within the context of a contemporary learning community, regardless of the student’s own world view. The interactive approach to learning is intended to move students beyond knowledge and understanding to doing, living and being. 

ROLE

  • Teach 21 units/year of assigned courses in the Biblical & Theological Studies program utilizing multiple modalities and creative pedogogical practices to to engage diverse undergraduate student populations (traditional and adult accelerated) in courses which include (primarily): BIB-100/300/314 Jesus & the Christian Community, General Education Biblical Literature courses, and General Education Biblical Perspectives courses.
  • Cultivate pedagogical excellence within program through collaborative curriculum development and modeling best practices in teaching.
  • Perform administrative duties related to staffing and scheduling courses for Biblical & Theological Studies (BTS) and General Education (GE) Biblical Studies courses across FPU’s 5 regional campuses and online.
  • Provide administrative assistance and oversight (as needed) for courses in the Biblical & Theological Studies program (total administrative duties comprising 9 units of non-teaching assignment load).
  • Collaborate with the Biblical & Theological Studies Program Director on tasks such as support for adjunct instructors, responding to student concerns, representing the Biblical & Theological Studies program at relevant campus meetings/events.
  • Collaborate with the Biblical & Theological Studies program faculty on issues related to program development, assessment, and implementation.
  • Participate in and provide departmental, campus, and community service.
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda.
  • Advise students majoring or minoring in Biblical & Theological Studies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Earned terminal degree in biblical studies or related field from an accredited university (candidates with a master’s degree and nearing terminal degree completion, may be considered).
  • Record or promise of scholarly achievement.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of technology/learning management systems.
  • Ability to provide positive leadership and restorative discipline for students.
  • Ability to cross cultures and to understand and advance diversity.
  • Ability to address and commitment to modeling both the integration of Christian faith with the field of biblical studies as well as the integration of faith, learning, and action.
  • Experience in, or aptitude for, college-level teaching of both traditional-aged and adult students.
  • Evidence of experience with or aptitude for working efficiently and accurately in managing a diverse group of people in a complex work environment.
  • Ability to travel among FPU’s campuses as necessary.
  • Ability to network and work harmoniously with faculty, staff, administration, and students in a regional university with its foundation in the liberal arts and sciences.
  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the University’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning and involvement in a local church.

Preferred

  • Commitment to an Anabaptist theological orientation.
  • Disciplinary expertise and primary area of research in either Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) or New Testament.
  • Bilingual with the ability to speak and teach, preferably in Spanish and English.

COMPENSATION: Dependent on qualifications and experience and paid out over 12 months. Full-time benefits include insurance (medical, vision, dental, LTD), retirement (TIAA).
