Duties:

Under direction of the Chief or Lieutenant, a Sergeant’s primary responsibility is to supervise and coordinate activities of assigned Police and Community Service Officers, protect the lives, property and rights of all people, maintain order, enforce the law impartially and respond to crime and disorder in accordance with established procedures and directives. Along with the Police Officer, the Sergeant is the department’s primary contact with the community and is responsible for portraying to the community the department’s mission and goals. The Sergeant is responsible for ensuring Police Officers and Community Service Officers adhere to department rules and regulations and takes disciplinary measures against violators when required.
The Sergeant is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning.

Education/Experience:

A minimum of five years of Municipal, County, State or Campus Police experience required. Associate’s Degree (AAS/AS) or Combination Supervisory /Command/ Taskforce training and experience.
First- Line Supervisors School / OIC Certification.
State of Illinois Law Enforcement Certification required.
Minimum of OIC School or designated First Line Supervisors training.

Qualifications:

Primary function is to supervise the Police and Community Service Officers on each respective shift; directs and provides assistance to police and community service personnel pursuant to emergency situations, and as assigned by the chief; ensures that sufficient staff levels are maintained when personnel call off or other extenuating circumstance prevail; assists with arrests and detention of suspects and offenders; reports to the chief any deficiencies in performance or rule violations by police and community service officers; acts as a commanding officer in the absence of chief or lieutenant; and performs related duties as assigned.
