Follows specific instructions and performs clerical work using established routines. Applies limited analysis and problem solving in performing job duties.

Dress Code:

  • Men – Collared shirt or polo shirt and nice slacks or jeans.
  • Women – Office attire per BYUH standards
  • Shoes – Conducive to office attire, no causal flip flops


  • Come ready to be productive and fulfill assignments and projects
  • Work Schedule
    • Fulfill your 19 hour/week commitment.
    • Come to work at the scheduled time
    • Inform supervisor via phone call or email . . .
      • When you are unable to come to work IN ADVANCE if known ahead of time for class field trips, etc.; or AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if due to illness
    • Request leave of absence . . .
      • From your supervisor IN WRITING by completing “Student Employee Request for Leave” form at least a month ahead or preferably the beginning of the semester if you intend to leave during the semester breaks or the holidays.
    • Clock out for devotionals . . .
      • Student employees are NOT allowed to stay at work during weekly devotionals; they’re recommended to attend devotionals.
    • Leave office at 5:00pm . . .
      • No student is allowed to stay beyond 5;00pm, unless full-time staff employee is in the office.
    • University Holidays
      • There is no work and the office is closed.

Productivity/Quality of Work

  • Commit to learning as much as you can while at work – use of office equipment, software, etc.
  • Cross training is an essential part of the job which will allow you to learn more about the functions in Student Recruitment and Alumni will increase your ability to assist customers.
  • Accuracy is essential in everything – in filing, data entry, verification, etc., and double check your work as needed.
  • Ask questions when in doubt and not sure – better to be sure and get back to client, than to give incorrect information and need to be corrected later.
  • No surfing of the internet or doing personal/school work while working unless your project requires you to research topics or items needed to complete a task.
  • Using of cellphones are strictly prohibited during working hours EXCEPT IF IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY; cell phones are needed to be put away in student’s bag or in the department cell phone basket while punched in at work;
    • Should not be on work desk to avoid distraction and personal usage
    • Personal cell phone calls are to be done outside of the office
  • Use work time wisely – if you find yourself with nothing to do, please check with supervisors and managers to see if you can assist in other tasks and projects.
  • Keeping your office area clean and organized is your responsibility and highly recommended.

Answering Phones:

  • Be cheerful and helpful when customers come to the office.
  • Respond to voicemail and email within 24 hours.
  • Answer phones:
    • “Aloha, BYU-Hawaii Recruitment and Alumni office, this [give your name], how may I help you?”
  • Understand who does what in the Ho’okele department so that you will be better able to assist customers. It will also be helpful to know where basic contact numbers of key departments on campus.
  • Ask contact information, FIRST & LAST NAME, EMAIL, PHONE NUMBER, in case a full time staff in office need to return a call or from a walk-in.


  • All Recruitment and Alumni matters are to be kept confidential and not to be shared outside of the Recruitment and Alumni office. This is a condition of your continued employment in HR.

Employment Termination:

  • Provide at least 1 month termination notice if you plan on leaving the Recruitment and Alumni office. This will help us with staffing.
