DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Hazardous Materials Data Technician performs a variety of duties and support functions related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste handling and storage; upkeep of Material Safety Data Sheets throughout the various Right to Know Information Centers on campus; and monitors compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations/mandates. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this job class exercise responsibility for gathering, distributing, and maintaining current information and understand health hazards, precautionary measures, emergency procedures, and first aid requirements.
CLASSIFICATION: Range 30 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
SUPERVISOR: Cheif of Campus Safety or designee

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability
- Supports handling and storage of hazardous materials and hazardous waste; upkeep of l Safety Data Sheets throughout the various Right to Know Information Centers on campus; and compliance with applicable federal, state, and local statutes and mandates.
- Identifies opportunities to improve procedures and makes recommendations regarding hazardous materials waste minimization and chemical hazard assessment control.
- Develops computer tracking methods utilizing various software programs to record information necessary to meet reporting requirements.
- Assists in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures for centralization of information required in the tracking of chemical orders and Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Inspects campus facilities where hazardous materials are stored and evaluates compliance as assigned.
- Takes inventory and keeps records of chemicals used throughout the campus as assigned.
- Communicates and distributes updates of Safety Data Sheets and applicable requirements of legal regulations and mandates to faculty, managers, and classified employees.
- Provides assistance to District faculty, managers, and staff in matters of accumulation, packaging, storage, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Assists in marking and labeling shipping containers and preparing shipping documents and transportation of hazardous materials.
- Assists in the preparation and presentation of employee training on safe management of hazardous materials and emergency responses.
- Attends and participates in the District's Health and Safety Committee meetings.
- Maintains inventory of fire suppression systems and components.
- Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with others, including those from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and ability backgrounds.
- Minimum of two (2) semesters course work in college-level lab sciences classes, hazardous materials, or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Military hazardous materials experience and certifications may be substituted for experience or education.
- One year experience in science or related area.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Primary Responder Hazardous Materials Certificate Course within a reasonable time period established by the Supervisor.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.
One year experience in handling emergency hazmat spills.

New Classified Appointments will be placed at Step 1 on the Classified Salary Schedule and will graduate to the next step on July 1st if the hire date is on or before January 1, with subsequent steps annually thereafter to a maximum fifth step.
Longevity pay in accordance with Section 8.8 of the Classified Employee Collective Bargaining Agreement.
