Job Details
The Senior Legal Strategist will chart the direction for the Electoral Innovation Lab's involvement in redistricting and election policy nationwide. As redistricting is a state-by-state process, the strategist will build relationships with reform organizations within individual states, and craft a legal/policy strategy for each state to promote the drawing of fair maps, focusing on EIL’s priority states, and then work with local actors to implement the strategy. The Senior Legal Strategist will work with other members of the EIL team in assisting reform initiatives on other election related topics too, such as mail-in-voting, ranked choice voting, and primary election reform. The position will also contribute to the writing of legal scholarship. In doing all of this work, the Senior Legal Strategist will have support from, and provide supervision to, a Legal/Policy Analyst.
Responsibilities- Devise a legal strategy for promoting fair redistricting across the United States, identifying specific approaches for each state, focusing on EIL’s priority states.
- Work with local actors (such as advocacy organizations, redistricting commissions, and legal professionals) to implement selected strategies for addressing redistricting or other electoral reform efforts.
- With support from the Legal/Policy Analyst, co-author legal scholarship and write amicus briefs in support of election law cases. Contribute to op-eds, blogs, and other journalistic pieces to support electoral reform initiatives.
- Supervise Legal/Policy Analyst.
Essential Qualifications:
-J.D. degree. Demonstrated knowledge of and/or expertise in election law, voting rights, civil rights, or public policy with at least 5 years of experience in these fields.-Passion for democracy reform and commitment to addressing the legal issues surrounding redistricting.-Experience crafting legal and/or policy strategy, especially working with a number of partners.-Experienced team leader.-Proven writing abilities for a wide range of audiences.-Adept at communicating with state-level organizations about law and policy goals and how they can best achieve them.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Deep understanding of how underrepresentation impacts policy decisions in the U.S. -Adept at working as part of a cross-functional, interdisciplinary team.-Ability to think quantitatively or a willingness to learn the basics of quantitative analysis.-Litigation experience and an understanding of how plaintiffs challenge district maps in court.
