The new vice president will be expected to take office July 1, 2021.

MMA is a fully accredited, four-year, co-educational state university offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees that are highly regarded in the worldwide maritime industry and beyond. Located at the mouth of the scenic Cape Cod Canal, MMA is an hour’s drive from the thriving urban communities of Boston and Providence and offers easy access to the pristine beaches of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.

One of nine campuses of the Massachusetts state university system, MMA serves and prepares 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students for careers in the marine transportation, engineering, international maritime business, emergency management, and environmental fields. MMA has long offered a successful blend of career-focused education informed by strength in both an academic core and the discipline of regimental life. Reporting to the president, the vice president for student services is a member of the senior leadership team and participates in institutional planning and decision making. The vice president partners with senior administrators, faculty, staff, student leaders, and trustees to ensure that cadets receive the highest quality student life experience through services that support their well-being, development, engagement, and success. The vice president is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership, and management of units and functions that comprise the student services division: the dean of students/commandant’s office (housing, residential life, conduct, student government, and activities), athletics, health services (medical and mental health services), public safety, and intercultural engagement. The vice president and the student services team are critically engaged in all aspects of the cadet experience, including leadership and character development; campus life, teamwork, and daily activities and operations; conduct, morale, and discipline; and drills, ceremonies, and physical fitness. This position supervises 31 staff employees, including six direct reports, and manages a $3.5 million budget.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy seeks in its new vice president for student services an experienced leader of people and programs who thinks strategically, communicates effectively, manages resources wisely, acts with the highest degree of integrity, and inspires the confidence and trust of others. Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree and demonstrated experience fostering student learning and development, though exceptional candidates with a bachelor’s degree and substantial leadership experience in a regimented environment will be considered. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate, senior leadership experience in higher education, and civilian merchant marine or military experience. This person will also demonstrate a passion for working with students, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an affinity for the distinctive mission and character of the Academy.
