The Campus Safety Officer provides a safe and secure campus environment. Facilitates and encourages respect for the law, campus safety, and institutional policy. Provides a safe environment to foster student learning and development.

Safety and Security: Patrol the University campus to maintain high visibility to foster a safe and secure environment; Observe and report incidents and complete necessary paperwork; Enforce University rules and regulations, including the Student Code of Conduct and Penal Code laws and regulations; Investigate violations and crimes; Escort University assets; Escort persons from campus as necessary; Respond to emergency and safety concern calls (such as but not limited to medical emergencies, traffic accidents, terrorist threats, bomb threats, workplace violence, domestic violence, crime situations, including stalking, felony assault, and other various incidents); Verify credentials of persons on campus and prevent and grant entry where appropriate. Mandated Campus Security Authority under the Jeanne Clery Act.

Specific Duties:

Relationships and Community:

  • Positively engage with diverse individuals and groups in support of an inclusive environment
  • Create positive interactions with campus community
  • Provide outstanding customer service to and communication with campus community
  • Engage in practices and behaviors that support the educational mission of the institution.

Customer Service:

  • Respond to calls for service
  • Proactively assess and communicate safety concerns and maintenance issues
  • Open and secure buildings and offices
  • Lock and unlock buildings, lock doors and gates
  • Provide information and respond to inquiries from students, staff and visitors
  • Provide directions to campus locations and information related to University programs and services

Training and Development:

  • Participate in training and personal development courses to maintain and enhance broad expertise and capabilities in all Campus Safety functions; develop in-depth knowledge and expertise in a specific area of Campus Safety.

Emergency Operations:

  • Serve as liaison during disasters such as fires and earthquakes
  • Respond to hazardous materials spills, industrial accidents, and emergencies and take appropriate action
  • Operate various campus systems, including water valves, electric switches and related systems during emergency situations
  • Investigate unusual conditions and take immediate action to reduce danger and possible malfunction of equipment; Notify appropriate departments
  • Issue parking notices
  • Respond to requests to block off parking lots and spaces at the request of the Parking Department as needed
  • Assist with shuttle relief.
  • Other duties as assigned.

* PLEASE BE ADVISED THE CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER POSITION REQUIRES THE OFFICER TO BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ALL SHIFTS. DAYS OFF WILL VARY.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in safety or security.
  • Valid Class C CA drivers license.
  • Satisfactory driving record
  • Possess and maintain a valid CA — BSIS Guard Card.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED.
  • Ability to pass a physical exam.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • PC 832 Course
  • This position requires obtaining and reviewing motor vehicle records (MVRs) prior to or during consideration of application as well as ongoing review through California’s Electronic Pull Notice (EPN) Program. This position is contingent upon meeting and maintaining acceptable and satisfactory driver’s driving records.
  • Campus Safety Officers are subject to continuous screening/periodic background checks as a condition of employment and / or continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-year experience in safety or security.
  • Experience in a college/university setting.
  • Familiar with security and fire alarms, two-way radios, computers, tablets, and smartphone devices.
