Associate Director, Duke Transplant Center IT
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TEAM REPORTS TO:
The Duke Transplant Center (DTC) Vice President with a strong dotted line to the DHTS Senior IT Manager and MD Director, DTC IT and Quality
This position is newly created and will serve as the leader for data access, management, and governance across all missions of the Duke Transplant Center (DTC): clinical care, research (basic, clinical, and translational) and education. This leader will be responsible for the development and implementation of curated patient cohorts (or registries) built at the clinical program level to support both clinical quality improvement and research. These cohorts will enable repeatable access to common data elements; single data assets fueling multiple clinical and research questions; increasing quality assurance; regulatory readiness, and improved data transparency through aligned governance.
Data – 50% Effort
Key leader responsible for curation, usability, and liquidity of transplant data sourced from the electronic medical record for both clinical research and quality improvement. Assure transplant data is stored in an “analysis-ready” format that is easily accessible and understood. Manage the design, development, implementation, integration, and maintenance of new and existing transplant data management applications. Assure best practices implemented for database management, integration, and reusability across multiple research and clinical questions. Manage the design, development, implementation, integration, and maintenance of new and existing data access applications for visualization and statistical analysis. Oversee both internal and external marketing and referral trend analysis and information dissemination to program leadership.
Governance and Programmatic Execution – 25% Effort
Oversee and execute data governance strategy, including the management, cleaning, and dissemination of curated data elements and metadata. Chair and manages data governance leadership committees. Create and manage the development and execution of transplant patient cohorts for longitudinal management supporting both quality improvement and clinical research needs. Oversee the maintenance and long term development roadmap for these patient cohorts.
Leadership – 25% Effort
Form and supervise a newly created DTC Data Systems team in alignment with the strategic planning goals of the Transplant Center. Create a positive team culture that fosters open communication, motivates staff, and encourages creativity. Seek out, listen to, accept, and act on feedback. Establish regular communication methods and meetings with staff; collectively and individually. Be available to direct report staff and indirect report staff, such as transplant quality, performance services, and biostatistical staff, on a routine basis to provide leadership and mentoring. Provide staff with clear measurable goals that are in alignment with the strategic plan, monitor performance, and quality of work. Assign staff duties and responsibilities; cross-train and reassign as needed. Foster and encourage the professional development of staff. Oversee operational staff training and certifications to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures [SOPs], regulations, and processes. Serve as an expert resource for the transplant community. Support colleagues in their project work; encourage completion. **And other work as assigned.**

The ideal candidate will have experience with database systems management or software development, possess Epic or Transplant, and experience in an academic medical center.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT THIS LEVEL
Master degree in computer science or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 4 years of management and leadership experience.
• OR a minimum of 10 years of operational experience in application development or database management.
• Must have a technology background.
• Experience in research and analytics OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
