Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The University Career Center provides centralized career planning assistance and programming to students of all majors. Over the next three years, the University Career Center will expand staff and services so that all undergraduate students complete career development activities focused on career awareness, exploration, preparation, and transition to career.

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Career Development Coordinator will provide one-on-one and group career advising and coaching to undergraduate students in regards to career awareness, exploration, preparation, and transition to career. Career advising and coaching will include but is not limited to resume /cover letter writing, mock interviews, class presentations, career and major exploration, interpretation of career assessments, professional career transition topics, and job and graduate school search strategies. Each Career Development Coordinator will provide career advising and coaching to students in a discipline within arts and sciences, business, education, or health sciences.

Advise and coach students in one-on-one and group settings (including workshops and class presentations) to include but not limited to resume reviews, mock interviews, career and major exploration techniques, administering and interpreting career assessments, professional career transition topics, and job and graduate school search strategies. Stay current on trends, resources, research, and employer recruitment activities that impact student employability.

Serve as a liaison with assigned academic departments depending on the discipline cluster in order to communicate programs, services, and student needs. Communicate with other academic departments on behalf of the Career Center as needed. Collaborate with academic advisors and faculty on discipline specific advising teams. Work with Counseling Services, Disability Services, and other Student Affairs areas to get students connected to additional resources to enhance their career development efforts and employability. Work with Career Development Team to implement advising models, career resources, and programs to enhance career development of students.

Special Projects

Job duties performed for the above function:

Career Development Coordinators will complete special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Career Development and the Director. These projects may focus on student outreach and marketing, departmental assessment, creating in-house publications, or specific career development initiatives such as career/industry education, diversity/special populations outreach and support, first/second year student outreach, student staff training, career programs, and/or major-specific projects.

Develop and present career development workshops and class presentations to specific academic majors and student groups. Assist with implementation of career fairs and other career development programs offered by the department.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaborate with Career Development team to assess and identify needs of students and develop career advising and programming strategies. Communicate with Internship Coordinator(s) to share student internship needs. Plan and present workshops and class presentations. Review career assessment information with students and develop career exploration plans and strategic career plans.
Collaborate with academic advisors on discipline specific advising teams.

Proposed Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field; and previous work experience in career services or related functional area within a college setting

Department Required Skills :

Assessing student needs and working with them to develop career action plans; Knowledge of employability skills and ability to help students connect their experience to these skills; Identify, select, and implement career coaching/advising/counseling interventions and techniques appropriate to student goals;
Written and verbal communication skills; Proficient in Microsoft Office program; Workshop/program planning and presentation/execution skills; Interpersonal and relationship building skills; Knowledge of student and career development theories and their application in practice; Creative, conscientious, and dedicated; Capable of multi-tasking and setting priorities within a team environment.

List any other requirements:

Experience advising college students and delivering career services programs within a higher education environment; Ability to use and learn career management and career development technology to assist students and contribute to departmental assessment plan; Use knowledge of career, occupational, and employment information for guiding students; Strong technology skills related to the area of career counseling/advising including career planning and job search tools and resources and/or career assessments (e.g., LinkedIn, Holland Self-Directed Search, MBTI, StrengthsQuest, computerized career guidance systems such as Focus2, social media, etc.); Using and learning technology for the purpose of administrative duties, accessing online career resources, and using departmental career management tools; Demonstrated experience creating and presenting educational workshops/programs; Experience with building and maintaining successful working relationships with students/alumni, faculty/staff, and employers; Creative, conscientious, and dedicated; Ability to travel for professional development; Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment supportive of a public liberal arts mission.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field; A candidate should also have at least one year of experience working in a college career services office. Candidates should have experience in and an understanding of career advising at a collegiate level, educational program development and planning; counseling, advisement, and ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff. Candidates should also have a commitment to student success and to diversity in an educational setting.
