TemporaryEssential Job Duties:
This team leads the development and execution of strategic, multi-platform communications that advance the mission, vision, and brand of NC State University, CALS, and the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service.
This is the research arm, supporting more than 600 active basic and applied research projects. Research is conducted on more than 18 on-campus research facilities, four field labs and 18 research stations throughout the state. NC State Extension agents complete our discovery pipeline by taking research-based solutions to extension centers and fields in all 100 North Carolina counties for testing and refinement.
The science communicator is responsible for developing and writing evidence- and research-based content that follows content best practices, communicates college brand and strategic plan messages, and meets our communications and marketing strategic goals.
The science communicator will work with a dynamic team of writers, communication strategists, designers, and project leaders to ensure tone, language, and substance advance the department’s and NC State brand.
Work closely with other Communications content developers (writers, videographers and social media specialists) to write research- and evidence-based articles and content and create concepts that achieve the college’s strategic goals.
Work closely with the leadership team to identify key research topics and researchers to highlight in science and marketing content.
Develop content ideas from concept through produced materials, and be responsible for content research, writing, and copy editing for content distributed across college-wide channels, initiatives, and internal client platforms.
Create science marketing communications content for the website that appeals to students, alumni, internal constituents, peers, and influencers who follow our brand; and increases inbound traffic while following web content strategy best practices.
Pitch ideas for development as articles on news and university-wide platforms (e.g., NC State News and The Abstract)

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Department Required Skills:

Demonstrated experience writing effective content for projects for web, print, videos, and collateral.
Instincts for how to conceptualize and package story content into a variety of story formats.
Exceptional writing and editing skills.
Knowledge of AP style.
Flexibility to contribute strategic copy concepts and ideas while still delivering copy for small and large assignments on time and on-brand.
Ability to work across multiple disciplines to develop the right messages at the right time to influence strategic outcomes.
Able to thrive in a fast-paced, self-starter environment
Team player with experience working collaboratively on projects
Strong background in and understanding of social media and web
Ability to keep current with content developments and trends.Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:
- At least 3-5 years experience in developing, writing, and managing content for medium or large organizations.
- Higher education experience is a plus.
