Position Summary:

The Program in Public Health is recruiting researchers in the laboratory assistant or assistant specialist classifications for molecular testing for COVID-19. Responsibilities will include development and validation of molecular diagnostics tests for a campus-wide COVID-19 screening effort. Tests may include but are not limited to high-throughput quantitative PCR and Illumina next generation sequencing. In addition to conducting tests, the candidate will be responsible for performing and monitoring quality assurance activities, maintenance and operation of laboratory instruments, ordering and maintaining supplies, and supporting laboratory BSL2 compliance. Candidates, depending on skills, may also be responsible for analysis of molecular test data, data storage, and communicating records of molecular tests.

Compensation Range:

Salary and appointment in laboratory assistant or specialist is commensurate with training and experience. The initial appointment will be for six months.

Required:

Qualified applicants must have one of the following: 1) a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; 2) an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution; or 3) education or training equivalent to at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution at least half of which are in science courses including chemistry, biology and or medical laboratory technology and laboratory training including at least 3 months documented laboratory training in quantitative RT PCR, or 4) have successfully completed an accredited medical technology program. Previous experience in a CLIA or BSL2 testing laboratory is desirable, but not required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel is required. Programming skills, particular Python or R is advantageous.
