Position Summary:

UCI Law, founded just ten years ago, is the newest public law school in California in nearly 50 years and is currently ranked 27 nationally by U.S. News & World Report. UCI Law seeks to train lawyers for the practice of law at the highest levels of the profession and has created a community of law students from a broad spectrum of society. Experiential learning is at the core of our mission at UC Irvine School of Law. Students in their first-year Lawyering Skills class will have the opportunity to interview an actual client. Each student works with an actual client or clients, under close supervision, in an environment designed to encourage reflection on the values and responsibilities of the legal profession. A key component to experiential learning at UCI Law includes the Externship Program, which provides academic credit for students doing legal work for judges, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. UCI Law also provides a unique opportunity for real-world educational and professional development through the UCDC Law Program and the UCI Law in NYC Program. Pro Bono Program and the Externship Program More than 90 percent of UCI Law students participate in the Pro Bono Program, ensuring that legal services are provided to those most vulnerable in the local community, as well as communities across the country and around the world. Students develop legal skills while working with low-income clients and providing assistance to underserved causes. The Externship Program provides academic credit for students doing legal work for judges, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. Reporting to the Director of Externships, the Experiential Learning Coordinator provides critical support to students working with outside legal organizations, government entities, and judicial chambers, and synchronizes the efforts developing externship and pro bono placements.

Provides leadership and coordination in developing, implementing, and evaluating the experiential learning program for Pro Bono Program and The Externship Program.. Position will focus on developing and implementing a communication strategy to advance high-impact experiential learning. Oversees the creation and delivery of programming to enhance experiential learning and its impact on student learning. Serves as an advocate for experiential learning by implementing strategy consisting of communications, training, and compliance. Serves as a resource for faculty and staff with questions about best practices in experiential learning. Uses skills as a seasoned and experienced administrative operations professional to manage, plan and administer the operations of a small to mid-sized academic or non-academic department or organizational unit with limited scope. Work is performed independently under limited supervision of Director of Externships . May report to a chair, director, or a higher level administrative operations professional or manager. Perform short- and long-term planning for the organization. May supervise staff or students. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Compensation Range:

Monthly Rate: $5,200.00 - 5,416.66

Required:

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management. Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines. Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. Ability to treat sensitive matters with discretion and tact, and to maintain confidentiality. Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service. Demonstrated experience in project management with the ability to initiate, design, plan, and execute multiple complex projects simultaneously with accuracy and efficiency in a high-pressure environment. Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees. Expense tracking in a budget spreadsheet for each experiential learning program, relay policies on purchasing, process purchasing paperwork and reimbursements, and report balance summaries as needed. Excellent skills in working with high-level executives, professionals, leaders, and/or practicing attorneys that may require quick turnaround on tasks.

Preferred:

Broad knowledge and acumen in applying sound decision making and collaborative work methods in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Excellent analytical skills with the ability to perform data analysis, pulling data from multiple sources and determining appropriate courses of action/solutions. Skill and experience in coordinating special events, organizing educational events and insuring promised benefits for students. Prepares awards and ceremony recognition, including certificates and presentation(s). Knowledge of experiential learning theories, professional development services, employment trends, and academic environments, especially as they relate to legal fields. Solid knowledge drafting articles and social media posts related to experiential learning. Conducting library and internet searches for research materials utilizing the Law School's electronic library resources as necessary. Management of registration for externship courses, textbook and course pack orders, request review and desk copies from publishers, communicate important course information to students by e-mail and/or course websites, and answer course-related questions appropriately.

Special Conditions Required:

  • Occasionally travel with students for experiential learning opportunities, assisting with logistics and administration of such trips.
