Position Summary:

The Office of Global Engagement is responsible for developing UCI's global strategy and tactical partnerships with international academic institutions, corporations, and governments to establish collaborations and exchanges that further the university's teaching, research and public service mission. The Office of Global Engagement provides strategic planning and support for UCI's engagement with the world outside the United States. While promoting UCI's reputation around the world, it assists the Chancellor and Provost in defining objectives and plans for collaboration on international education, research, and service with institutions in other countries. (

UCI seeks an innovative leader in the field of international affairs for the position of Deputy Chief Global Affairs Officer. Under the minimal direction of the Chief Global Affairs Officer, the Deputy Global Affairs Officer is independently responsible for assisting the Chief in providing leadership to the department and campus community in the area of international affairs. The Deputy works collaboratively to build partnerships and develop programs and events that elevate UCI's global awareness and presence. The Deputy serves as key strategist for the Chief in initiating and developing new strategic direction, long- and short-range plans and innovative initiatives. In the absence of the Chief, or by request, the Deputy will provided interim leadership handle all matters, including emergency response and crisis handling. The Deputy Chief Global Affairs Officer has primary responsibility for the programming, events, and communication of the Office of Global Engagement. These might include educational workshops, participation in festivals on and off campus, promotional events, grant programs, a wide variety of special events and other activities of a similar nature. Supports faculty and other campus units with refining their international programming ideas and will support campus leadership with international travel plans such as overseeing logistics, communications, and briefings. Drafts comprehensive communication plans and coordinates execution. The Deputy also oversees office administration, manages the fellowship and grant opportunities, and works on a variety of special projects.

  • 9 - 10 years with BA/BS, or
  • 1 - 2 years with JD/MA/MS, or
  • Equivalent experience
  • Experience working in an international and multi-cultural setting.
  • Experience managing an area in international higher educaiton (preferred)

    Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

    Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs. Strong presentation and oral communication skills to clearly provide information and data to groups of various sizes, including audiences in which English is a second language Demonstrated ability to be diplomatic and professional at all times in the workplace. Proven ability to focus on priorities, strategies, and vision. Familiarity with contracts or agreements. Leadership abilities, team building experience, and demonstrated managerial success Advanced skills in short- and long-range planning, program and project management, facilitation and collaboration. Advanced ability to coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels. Advanced knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures. Sound strategic thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions. Advanced ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of staff and members of the community. Possesses a strong intercultural awareness and sensitivity.


    Advanced degree preferred

    Financial analysis and reporting techniques. Knowledge of business and legal processes in foreign nations and the U.S.

    Special Conditions Required:

    Domestic and international travel. Some programs and events occur at international locations.
