Position Description:
The Hazmat Outreach and Education Specialist leads LOSH's efforts to prevent worker and community exposures to hazardous materials, toxic releases, and environmental hazards in Southern California.

The Specialist oversees high-quality hands-on training programs, including the 40-hour HAZWOPER, 24-hour Hazardous Waste Operations, 8-hour annual Refresher, First Responder Operations, and other courses based on need. S/he is responsible for all logistical aspects of the training program, including scheduling courses; maintaining inventories of course materials and supplies; ensuring proper functioning of monitoring instruments and other equipment; co-facilitating course sessions and field/lab activities; managing course paperwork; and ensuring accurate grant reporting. The Specialist also coordinates with a team of LOSH staff and consultant instructors with field and subject matter expertise to maintain and update course curricula and materials; conduct outreach and marketing; and adapt training materials and approaches to meet the needs of diverse training audiences, which can include training in Spanish.

The Specialist participates in regular meetings of the LOSH-led Western Region Universities Consortium and its Advisory Board to exchange best practices for outreach, needs assessment, education and follow up to monitor the impact of the program. S/he works to expand LOSH hazmat and disaster response training and support activities via partnerships with labor, community/environmental justice and government representatives. The Specialist also represents LOSH in public meetings and community forums; participates in meetings of professional occupational and environmental associations and with federal funders; and keeps LOSH staff and consultants up-to-date on topics of relevance.
