Departmental Overview

The Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence (CE3) is a cluster of multiple student support programs in the Division of Equity and Inclusion. CE3 provides complex and multi-format programs and services to priority student populations to ensure their successful transition into the academy, academic success, graduation, and transition to graduate programs and professional careers. These services have a critical impact on the campus' ability to fulfill its mission of equity, access, and inclusion to California's diverse population.

The students served by the CE3 are historically marginalized students that may be at a higher risk of experiencing transitional challenges and/or academic difficulty. CE3 offers students solution-focused academic counseling and intervention, assessing academic needs and addressing academic and non-academic complexities/barriers to academic success; developing individual study plans; creating and fostering academic, social, and professional support networks and communities; credit bearing transition and success courses; academic strategy and enrichment workshops; enhancing academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs, academic/work life balance); academic and summer internships; service learning internships; student group development; academic achievement awards; scholarships and student scholar programs; student grant and emergency loan programs; outreach, recruitment, and campus yield activities; and community-building events.

The AAC 2 facilitates Nav Cal transition programming and provides success counseling services and direct assistance to NavCal undergraduate cohorts, with a focus in transition and navigation support. The incumbent performs responsibilities that include program development, assessment and evaluation, coordination of workshops and group academic counseling sessions, facilitation of credit bearing courses, participation in transfer and frosh orientation and yield events, fostering partnerships with campus-wide partners and stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Academic Counseling:
    • Provides multicultural academic and personal counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to successfully navigate the research university, engage in educational enrichment opportunities, and engage university systems and resources, providing information and referral assistance as necessary. Incorporating a variety of theoretical approaches, the incumbent manages a caseload of students from pre-admission outreach through graduation. Provides individualized career preparation resources and support to students who are first generation and/or low-income.
  • Programming/Course Implementation and Facilitation:
    • Administers specialized programs and projects, including workshops, courses, and seminars designed to enhance student success; works with supervisor to establish short- and long-term program goals and objectives. Assists in facilitating student support courses.
  • Nav Cal Mentor Supervision and Training:
    • Oversees the training and supervision of 10-15 Nav Cal Mentors.
  • Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Conducts assessment and evaluation of program components including coordination of workshops and group academic counseling sessions, facilitation of credit bearing courses.
  • Partnerships and Collaborations:
    • Facilitates partnership with various stakeholders including college advising, major advising, The Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, Housing, New Student Services, and the Career Center.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
  • Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and presentation skills. Ability to communicate information in small and large group settings.
  • Proficient computer skills including databases, word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and web-based systems.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a non-exempt, biweekly paid appointment. Hourly pay is commensurate with experience within the range of $26.34 - $28.73.
