With moderate supervision from the Associate Director for Counseling, The Assistant Director for Counseling position delivers administrative services to current and prospective students and their families regarding the financial aid process and procedures. Provides general and specific information and makes appropriate referrals regarding all aspects of student financial services.

This position requires basic knowledge on all aid programs offered through Georgetown, and the ability to apply general program rules to respond to the public. The Assistant Director for Counseling is responsible for preliminary review and processing of financial aid applications, maintenance of all financial aid records, and verbal communication with prospective students, enrolled students, and parents to ensure the highest standards of customer service.

This position reports directly to the Associate Director for Counseling along with one other Financial Aid Officer. The case load for this position also requires interaction with other office administrator(s). Reporting directly to this position is at least one Student Assistant. This position is one of 15 positions that comprise the staff of the Student Financial Services Counseling unit. The unit provides financial aid counseling to diverse student and parent populations and works closely with other University departments to ensure quality service is provided.


  • A bachelor's degree and two years of part-time or full-time work experience in counseling, customer services, and/or administrative support.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data and to use independent judgment where appropriate.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse client population, and commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer services.
  • Experience with and knowledge of PC based administrative software.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Any combination of experience with Ellucian's Banner, COGNOS, and/or Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and/or institutional financial aid program rules, regulations, or processes.

Other skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse client population, and commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer services.
  • Attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and to work under deadline pressures.
